School Day & Year - As a public school system, YES Prep is held to the same academic standards as independent school districts (ISDs). The TEA requires 75,600 minutes of instruction per school year with one school day defined as 420 minutes. All districts - charter and ISD - can develop the calendar that best meets the needs of their students and families so long as the minimum number of instructional minutes is satisfied annually. A YES Prep day typically runs from 8:00am-4:30pm, but each school determines the exact daily schedule. This flexibility allows us to offer the half-day Wednesday model that allows for staff professional development and collaboration time thereby reducing the amount of time staff spend on such activities after school hours. YES Prep has a longer school year than most local ISDs to ensure ample time to prepare our students for success in college and to meet the minimum number of instructional minutes per year.
Transportation – YES Prep provides free bus transportation for all students who live within their school’s zone. Students who do not reside within the priority zone may enroll and provide their own transportation.
Campus Facilities - Our charter with the state allows YES Prep to serve students in grades 6 – 12 . Limited facilities funding means that we have to maximize the use of our school buildings. By operating middle and high schools together, we are able to be more efficient with staff and facilities. In 2017, the Texas Legislature passed HB 21, which will provide charter schools in Texas with some facilities funding for the first time. Although this funding is helpful, we will have to continue prioritizing maintenance on some school buildings while deferring maintenance on others. Additionally, we will continue to advocate for equitable school facilities funding and to fundraise to help bridge the current gap in our funding.
Communication – Teachers at YES Prep value parent involvement and communicate with parents frequently by phone, email, or through conferences. Campuses also communicate with families regularly through weekly Parent Notes and progress reports.
School Uniforms – Each YES Prep campus has specific uniform shirts that are available for purchase on the campuses. Khaki pants, shorts or skirts are typically worn with the campus uniform shirt.
Summer School – Incoming 6th grade and 9th grade students are required to attend a summer school session. The sixth grade session introduces students to the YES Prep culture and systems. Our ninth grade session prepares students for high school and includes teaching them how to calculate their GPA and how our college counseling program works. YES Prep offers Spring and Summer credit recovery courses for high school students who need to retake classes. Click here to see the YES Prep District Calendar.
