HOUSTON, Texas (August 15, 2016) – YES Prep Eisenhower opened its doors to 154 students today within Aldine Independent School District’s Eisenhower High School, marking yet another expansion of the partnership between the two school systems. The partnership began in 2013 when YES Prep Hoffman opened inside of Aldine’s Hoffman Middle School with 140 sixth grade students. In 2015, the two systems launched the iASPIRE initiative that offers YES Prep’s college and career exploration seminar to students at Aldine’s Eisenhower Ninth Grade School.
Students who graduate eighth grade from YES Prep Hoffman will feed into YES Prep Eisenhower. This feeder pattern will follow Aldine ISD’s pattern thereby creating stability within the communities it serves. “We want students and families to feel that they can stay in their neighborhood throughout their entire K-12 school experience,” explained Jamie Downs, YES Prep Eisenhower’s principal.
This school year, the iASPIRE initiative will enter its second year, serve a new cohort of ninth graders and offer a Sophomore Seminar to the original cohort. Each year, the initiative will serve another grade level at Eisenhower High School so that eventually all students participate in a college-readiness seminar each year of high school. Eisenhower principal Ben Ibarra added, "The Eisenhower administration and faculty are excited to collaborate with YES Prep for student success and we look forward to a great school year!"
Both Aldine ISD and YES Prep learn from each other. They share best practices as indicated by the iASPIRE program and the feeder pattern between Hoffman and Eisenhower. Additionally, YES Prep Hoffman and Eisenhower students are able to participate in sports with Aldine students and share the same mascot which helps create a sense of unity between the schools sharing a building. “I am pleased that the Aldine/YES Prep partnership is now expanding into the high school. The partnership offers Aldine parents another choice within our system and YES Prep, like Aldine, is committed to providing a quality program for each student. Our partnership has been a great learning opportunity for both organizations,” said Aldine ISD Superintendent, Dr. Wanda Bamberg.
The 32,000 families currently on charter waitlists in Houston necessitates partnerships like this one. “YES Prep is committed to a vision for Houston’s future that one day every student will have equitable access to an excellent, college-ready education. In order to achieve this vision, YES Prep must collaborate with like-minded organizations—organizations that believe deeply in the limitless potential of all children. By opening YES Prep Eisenhower, more students will be prepared to succeed in college and beyond and will bring our vision for Houston’s future one day closer to becoming a reality,” said YES Prep CEO, Mark DiBella.
