On Monday, August 14, teachers at YES Prep Public Schools’ 17th campus – YES Prep Northline — welcomed 157 sixth-grade students.
YES Prep Northline, located at 5815 Airline Drive in north Houston, was transformed from a hospital built in 1953 into a school in less than six months. The Northline campus will help fill a growing need in Houston for more YES Prep classrooms and will ultimately serve students from grades six through 12.
With more than 7,300 students (an increase of more than 2,100 kids since last school year) on a record-breaking wait list to get into YES Prep schools, YES Prep plans to open an additional three schools by 2020. However, demand is expected to continue to outpace open seats due to the lack of state funding for charter school facilities. Despite many coming in two or three years below grade level, YES Prep students continuously buck national trends and beat the odds in their preparation for college. YES Prep Public Schools is an open-enrollment public charter school system educating students in grades six through 12 in Houston’s most underserved communities.
More about YES Prep Northline’s Construction
The building operated as a hospital through the late 1980s and was then sold to a church. YES Prep purchased the building in 2016, and the drastic renovations began in March. About 50,000 square feet of the 93,486 sf-building, including 28 classrooms, have been built out so far with the other half due to be completed when students return from winter break. The school has lots of courtyards, which gives it a college campus feel. One of the courtyards is designated for family events. Cost: $11.7 million.
