Protecting our transgender students

In the midst of the uncertain times in which we live, I am reminded of our collective resolve to embrace and protect diversity in order to eliminate educational inequity and advance social justice. Preserving the privacy and safety of students, families, and staff is a top priority at YES Prep and one way that we create safe and nurturing schools for ALL of our students.
As you may have heard, on Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Justice and Department of Education rescinded the joint guidelines intended to provide federal protections specifically for transgender students. In an official letter, the Departments reaffirm that all schools must ensure that all students, including LGBTQ students, are able to learn and thrive in a safe environment. The Department of Education Office for Civil Rights will continue its duty under the law to hear all claims of discrimination and will explore every appropriate opportunity to protect all students and to encourage civility in our classrooms. The Department of Education and the Department of Justice are committed to the application of Title IX and other federal laws to ensure such protection.”
YES Prep is in full compliance with all Federal and State laws, including Title IX and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). We have also trained all School Directors and Student Support Counselors on our transgender student policy to ensure that every student feels safe, protected, and welcome on all of our campuses. Even with the DOJ’s and DOE’s decision to rescind President Obama’s executive order, we will continue to follow the guidelines outlined in our policy.
We will also continue to monitor issues that directly affect our diverse community and to provide information and resources that help us advocate for and support them. Please visit the Know Your Rights page on our website and share resources that you have.
The road to a truly just society is long and arduous, and yet our commitment to inclusivity and diversity remains unwavering. We will continue to protect ALL students as required by law and more importantly, as demanded by our values.
In solidarity,
