Under Texas law, the Board first must initiate a 21-day waiting period before it can formally vote on a contract to hire the CEO finalist.  DiBella is expected to be the third leader in the organization’s history, succeeding Jason Bernal and founder Chris Barbic.

DiBella’s selection was the culmination of an extensive nationwide search. The Board of Directors, along with representatives of YES Prep’s senior leadership team, Principals, teachers, and central office leaders interviewed the final candidates.

“Over the last several months, we engaged in a rigorous search for the best leader to serve YES Prep’s more than 10,000 students— someone with leadership experience, as well as a proven track record of promoting growth and excellence,” said Chairman of the Board, Mark Gregg. “The search committee developed a diverse pool of exceptional candidates experienced in leading excellent urban charter school systems as well as managing change in public school districts, and the board conducted extensive interviews and due diligence on its finalists,” said Gregg.

“After our exhaustive search, we are confident that Mark DiBella is the best candidate for the CEO position. Mark has worked for YES Prep since 2001 and has spearheaded much of YES Prep’s growth and success. In his tenure at YES Prep he has worked as a teacher, principal, Head of Schools, Chief Operating Officer, and Superintendent, and thus knows what it takes in every part of our work to provide the highest quality education for students,” Gregg said.

For the past two years, DiBella acted as Superintendent and was responsible for managing the organization’s budget, executing the growth strategy to serve more children, and overseeing core business functions, including the management of 15 campuses, teachers and staff, system and campus-level operations and technology, district partnerships, community engagement, and state-level advocacy.

On being named the sole finalist for CEO, DiBella said, “I’m honored to have been selected. In my fifteen years with YES Prep, I have seen first-hand how YES Prep can change this city’s future by proving what all children can accomplish. I have formed many meaningful relationships with colleagues, students, and families who strive towards our vision every day – to redefine what is possible when children have equitable access to an excellent, college-ready education.”

DiBella is a graduate of Rice University’s Masters of Business Administration program and Rice Education Entrepreneurship Program (REEP).  He also holds a BA from the College of William and Mary.  Mark began his career in education as a 1999 corps member with Teach For America, teaching 5th grade at Garcia Elementary in the Houston Independent School District (HISD).

During the 21-day waiting period, DiBella will meet with YES Prep’s students and parents, community members, Board of Directors, and senior leadership team.
