Secondary Visual Arts

Fostering creativity, critical thinking, and artistic expression for all students

Program Overview

At YES Prep, we believe every student is an artist with a unique perspective to share. Our Visual Arts program is designed to inspire creative thinking, build technical skills, and develop students' ability to see and interpret the world around them. Through hands-on art-making and thoughtful observation, students explore a wide range of artistic media, learn foundational art concepts, and engage with both historical and contemporary works of art.

Our program is built on four key pillars—Observe, Create, Reflect-Respond, and Display—which guide students through a dynamic creative process. As they progress through the program, students refine their ability to express ideas visually, think critically about their own work and the work of others, and build the skills necessary for success in advanced high school art courses, including AP Art Studio.

Visual Art Courses

  • All YES Prep 6th and 7th grade students take one semester of art each school year - Art 6 and Art 7

  • YES Prep high school students have access to Art I, Art II, and AP Art Studio.

Art 6 – Art II are mixed media courses that introduce students to a diverse range of artistic techniques and materials. Throughout these courses, students will explore drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles, and printmaking, building both creative and technical skills. In AP Art Studio, students have the opportunity to specialize in 2D Art & Design, Drawing, or Sculpture, allowing them to develop a focused portfolio that showcases their artistic voice and vision.  AP Art courses offer students the opportunity to earn college credit by submitting a portfolio for evaluation, with credit awarded to those who achieve a qualifying College Board score.
