About the Girl Rising Exhibition

For the past seven years YES Prep has presented the Girl Rising Exhibition. All YES Prep schools with an Introduction to Rhetoric & Composition (IRC) course are invited to participate. Girl Rising is "a girls' education nonprofit with a mission to use the power of storytelling to change the way the world values girls and their education”

This event began as an opportunity for 11th grade English students to raise awareness about the plight of girls around the world who experience challenges that prevent or limit their access to education. As part of a unit of study centered on the documentary, Girl Rising, and the accompanying book, students learn about how issues like child marriage, modern slavery, and limited access to schools and teachers affect girls in countries like Nepal, Peru, India, and Ethiopia, and what others are doing to advocate for them. Students then develop multi-media projects to inspire and inform their communities.

The exhibition gives students an opportunity to showcase what they have learned in a meaningful an unforgettable way. Although the event is not a competition, YES Prep students have called the project and event one of the most memorable and empowering experiences of their high school careers. Celeste Fuentes, senior at YES Prep North Forest Secondary reflects on her participation in the Girl Rising Exhibition during her junior year by saying “This project made me realize how much more I can help others and if helping others through my art can bring this emotional [response] to them, that is what I want.”
