What is the YES Prep Online Scholars program and what does it seek to accomplish?

The YES Prep Online Scholars Program (YPOP) allows students in grades 9-12 to take one or more live, online classes during their regular school day schedule. These classes are taught by a YES Prep teacher who is able to teach students from multiple campuses at one time.

The YES Prep Online Scholars Program allows students to gain access to additional AP and specialty elective courses, which are not offered at their campus.

The following courses are offered via this program: AP Computer Science Principles, AP Government, AP Psychology, AP Spanish Literature, Fundamentals of Computer Science, Mandarin Chinese I, and Mandarin Chinese II. All courses designated as AP provide students the opportunity to earn college credit (at no cost) based on their exam performance in May.

In addition to the knowledge students will gain from the online course(s) they take, they will also build skills in technology, communication, and self-efficacy through the live online teaching method. These skills are extremely valuable as students prepare for college and career success.

How does this program integrate into my child’s daily schedule?

Online classes are reflected on the students’ daily schedule on their campus just like all their other classes. When students report to the classroom, a campus staff member (called the Learning Coach) will monitor students’ progress and behavior while the online teacher is teaching the online class in Teams. The in-person Learning Coach oversees the following actions:

· Checking to ensure that students’ cameras are on

· Making sure that students are actively participating

· Ensuring that students are completing assignments as identified by the online teacher.

Students join the online teacher’s class meeting through Microsoft Teams and use their Schoology online course. YPOP students must adhere to all campus behavioral and academic expectations. Online teachers provide positive reinforcement as well as consequences (when necessary), follow up with families and/or other campus staff regarding student performance, assign tutorials, etc. At the end of class, students leave the call and continue to follow their daily schedule as normal.

How do I know if my student is the right fit for an online class?

The ideal YPOP student:

Understands the format of the course and understands that online courses require a high degree of student initiative and independence. Students will need to navigate online programs and proactively reach out to their teachers when they need support.
Needs infrequent reminders to stay fully engaged. Students who regularly require reminders to stay on task or complete their work from teachers in a regular in-person classroom setting will struggle to be successful in an online course where students need to rely more on their own motivation and work habits.
Is prepared to proactively communicate and knows how to appropriately advocate for themselves. Online courses require proactive communication from the students to get support and collaborate with other students and the teacher. There are far fewer opportunities for students to get direct support from the teacher. Depending on how many students are also taking the course at the same campus, there may be fewer peers to lend each other support.
Has a track record of academic success and/or perseverance
Has a strong record of attendance

YPOP students are expected to meet with their cameras on and regularly unmute themselves to verbally participate in class.
