YPOP is an exciting opportunity that works best for students who are ready to take more ownership of their learning.

The ideal YPOP student is someone who:

• Is independent and self-motivated.
  They understand that online learning requires initiative. This includes logging in on time, staying engaged, and reaching out for help when needed.

• Stays focused and on task.
  They need only occasional reminders and can manage their time well during class without constant redirection.

• Communicates proactively.
  They’re comfortable speaking up, asking questions, and collaborating with classmates and teachers in both digital and in-person settings.

• Shows persistence and responsibility.
  They have a record of strong attendance and academic effort, even when work becomes challenging.

• Engages fully in the live class.
  YPOP students are expected to keep their camera on, participate verbally, and contribute to discussions and group activities regularly.

To fully participate and stay engaged in their online class, students should have:

• A school-issued laptop in good working condition

• A personal headset with a microphone for clear audio and active participation

• Any additional course materials listed by the teacher (for example, a notebook or sketchbook, depending on the class)

All technology and materials should be ready to use at the start of each class to help students stay focused and avoid interruptions.

You can monitor your student’s progress the same way you do for their other classes:

• Skyward: View official grades and attendance for each YPOP course.

• Schoology: See individual assignments, due dates, and teacher feedback to understand how your student is doing day to day.

Together, these two tools give you a full picture of your student’s learning and progress.

💡 Tip: Ask your student to show you their Schoology course each week — it’s a great way to stay connected to what they’re learning!

Each campus will determine which specific YPOP courses are available to its students. To understand your student's options, please reach out to your campus's front office or the Director of College Counseling at your student's campus.

Just like our typical on-campus classes, YPOP teachers are available for additional help during designated times. YPOP teachers hold virtual office hours and tutorials after school through Schoology and Zoom calls.

If your student experiences a tech issue (like a dropped connection, audio problem, or login error), here’s what to do:

1. Let the teacher or Learning Coach know right away.
   Students can message their teacher through Schoology chat or raise the issue with the on-campus Learning Coach.

2. Try simple fixes first.
   Refresh the page, restart the device, or rejoin the class call — these quick steps solve most issues.

3. If problems continue, get tech support.
   The campus Learning Coach or IT Field Service Technician can help troubleshoot, repair devices, or submit a ticket for more support.

Your partnership makes a big difference! Here are a few simple ways families can help students thrive in an online course:

• Ask about what they’re learning.
  Regular check-ins help students reflect on their progress and stay motivated. Try asking, “What did you discuss in your YPOP class today?” or “What was your favorite part of the lesson?”

• Encourage active participation.
  Remind your student to join class on time, stay on camera, and speak up during discussions — participation helps them stay connected and confident.

• Celebrate independence.
  Taking an online class requires self-management and perseverance. Acknowledge their effort and growth along the way!

• Monitor Schoology for updates.
  You can help your student stay on track by checking grades and assignment submissions together.

• Support communication.
  If your student is struggling or unsure about something, encourage them to message their YPOP teacher or Learning Coach for help.
