Understanding and Supporting Students With Autism at YES Prep

At YES Prep, we are committed to ensuring that all students receive the services and support they need to learn and grow. That includes students with autism spectrum disorder, or ASD. We recognize that autism affects each student differently, and we work closely with families and educators to meet students’ individual needs—academically, socially, and emotionally.

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts with others, and learns. It is called a “spectrum” because autism looks different for every individual. Some students may benefit from support with communication, behavior, or sensory needs, while others may show strong attention to detail or a preference for routines.

At YES Prep, we focus on understanding each student’s learning profile and providing the right tools to help them succeed in school.

How We Support Students With Autism

YES Prep’s Special Education team provides customized support plans for students with autism. We collaborate with teachers and families to create a school experience that meets each student’s needs. These supports may include:
  • Predictable routines and daily structure
  • Visual supports, such as picture schedules or cue cards
  • Task breakdowns to support step-by-step learning
  • Encouragement and positive reinforcement
  • Classroom strategies for communication and behavior

We continuously monitor progress and adjust supports as needed in partnership with families.

Helping Students Build Social and Emotional Skills

Learning goes beyond academics. We also help students with autism develop life skills related to communication, problem-solving, and relationships. Our team supports students as they:
  • Practice how to greet others, share, or ask for help
  • Learn to recognize and express their feelings
  • Use tools and strategies to stay calm during frustration or overload
  • Build connections with classmates through shared activities
