BridgeYear Career Test Drives are hands-on career exploration experiences that allow high school students to engage directly with in-demand career pathways through interactive simulations and activities. Designed to increase awareness of high-growth, high-wage careers that may not require a four-year degree, the program helps students make informed decisions about their postsecondary options. Through BridgeYear, students gain practical insight into fields such as healthcare, technology, and skilled trades while building confidence in their abilities and interests. During the 2024–2025 school year, students at YES Prep Fifth Ward Secondary, Gulfton Secondary, Hobby Secondary, North Forest Secondary, and Northside Secondary participated in Career Test Drives, expanding their understanding of real-world career opportunities and postsecondary pathways.

The Houston Methodist PCA Externship is a competitive, paid opportunity that prepares high school seniors for careers in healthcare by combining hands-on clinical experience with classroom instruction. As part of the program, students complete training that allows them to sit for the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) exam—earning a professional credential before entering college. Through our strong partnership with Houston Methodist, YES Prep contributed 38 of the 90 applicants citywide, with 6 seniors ultimately selected for this prestigious externship. This program not only equips students with real-world healthcare experience but also provides a valuable jumpstart toward their postsecondary and professional goals.

Technolochicas is a national initiative designed to inspire and empower Latinas to pursue careers in technology by highlighting the stories of successful Latina women in tech. The program offers hands-on experiences, mentorship, and exposure to computer science and STEM pathways. It specifically targets middle and high school Latina students, aiming to bridge the diversity gap in the tech industry. During the 2024–2025 school year, students at YES Prep East End Secondary, Fifth Ward Secondary, North Central Secondary, and Northside Secondary participated in Technolochicas programming, gaining valuable skills, confidence, and connections that support their long-term career aspirations in STEM.

Timeline: 2-day initiative, fall and spring program 

The Longhorn Engineering Summer Camp (LESC), hosted by the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, is a free, interactive program designed to engage rising 8th and 9th graders in hands-on engineering experiences. The camp introduces students to the diverse applications of engineering—spanning art, sports, medicine, sustainability, and more—through daily presentations by UT faculty and students, followed by guided, hands-on activities that bring these concepts to life.  

This summer, 50 students from YES Prep East End and Northside Secondary campuses will participate in the Houston session of LESC. This opportunity will allow them to explore engineering fundamentals and gain early exposure to STEM fields, fostering interest and confidence in pursuing future careers in engineering.
