Opening August 2027
Serving pre-K through 2nd Grade in 2027–28
Expanding one grade level each year until serving pre-K through 5th Grade.
Every great neighborhood deserves great schools.
The best ones do far more than teach children to read, write, and work through math problems. They light a spark of curiosity, nurture confidence, and give friendships the room to take root. They turn into gathering places for families, launchpads for young ambitions, and anchors for the community around them. Give a child the chance to learn, grow, and belong close to home, and the whole neighborhood rises with them.
That conviction is what inspires us as we prepare to open YES Prep Fifth Ward Elementary in Fall 2027.
Meet the Founding Principal

Norma Gonzalez
Founding Principal
Fifth Ward Elementary

Norma Gonzalez was raised in Houston and is a first-generation English speaker, first-generation college graduate and product of bilingual education. Her experiences inspire her commitment to supporting students with similar backgrounds and ensuring they have access to high-quality educational opportunities.
Gonzalez began her career as an elementary bilingual teacher in Houston ISD. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Houston and a master's degree in educational administration from Texas A&M University. With 15 years of experience as a bilingual educator and 11 years in school leadership, Gonzalez has dedicated her career to advancing educational equity and instructional excellence. As principal of Gallegos Elementary School, she helped increase student achievement, narrow learning gaps and strengthen communication between families and the school.
While serving as head of schools at YES Prep, Gonzalez supported school leaders across the organization, including those launching new campuses. Through that experience, she discovered a passion for building and leading a school community from the ground up. Inspired by the impact of strong founding leadership, she is excited to serve as founding principal of YES Prep Fifth Ward Elementary.
Throughout her career, Gonzalez has remained committed to campus leadership, where she can directly support students, staff and families. She looks forward to building a strong school culture, fostering meaningful relationships and driving student achievement through high-quality instruction and a focus on equity.
