In the heart of Houston's bustling energy industry, a tradition of philanthropy and camaraderie has been flourishing since 2006. The annual YES Prep Oil & Gas Texas Hold 'Em Tournament has not only become a highlight for the city's professionals but also a valuable fundraiser for the students of YES Prep, raising more than $22 million to date to provide them with the education they deserve.
This year's event, held at the Corinthian Houston, was no exception to the excitement and generosity that characterizes the tournament. More than 600 industry professionals, backed by more than 80 companies, gathered for an evening of high-stakes poker and raised over $2.25 million for YES Prep students.
The atmosphere was electric as players reunited with old friends and prepared for the thrill of the tournament. Amidst strategic contemplation of hands, participants indulged in a decadent spread.
As the final round unfolded in The Vault— which served as the original First National Bank vault for more than half a century—, sponsored by Vitol, all eyes were on the ultimate showdown. With the skill and determination that defined the evening, Kenley Steeg at the Alta Resources table emerged victorious, claiming the title of the 2024 tournament champion for the second year in a row.
Reflecting on the event's success, Caitlin Monteith, development manager at YES Prep, thanked the sponsors whose unwavering support has allowed YES Prep to grow.
"YES Prep continues to flourish in Houston because of the support of our generous sponsors – we are truly grateful," she remarked, emphasizing the collaborative effort behind such a remarkable night.
Steve Mohtashami, a member of the YES Prep Texas Hold’ Em Tournament Steering Committee, underscored the significance of the energy industry's support for education. "The energy industry is essential to the strength of the Houston economy," he noted. "And we know that when students have access to college-ready education, regardless of their background, our economy wins."
He further emphasized the strategic importance of investing in YES Prep and the tournament, highlighting its role in shaping the future economy, one student at a time.
The 19th Annual YES Prep Oil & Gas Texas Hold 'Em Tournament was more than just an evening of cards and competition; it was a testament to the power of community and the unwavering commitment to providing quality education for all. As the chips were stacked and the cards were dealt, the real winners were the students whose futures have been brightened by the generosity and dedication of Houston's energy sector.
