Every year, YES Prep honors the top two students of their graduating class at the annual Valedictorian + Salutatorian Banquet. This year, we celebrated the Val+Sal Banquet on May 28, 2024, at YES Prep’s Home Office. Univision 45 News Anchor Osvaldo Corral once again joined us to serve as the event's honorary master of ceremony.

Bray Oaks Secondary
Valedictorian: Noelia Calderon
Noelia Calderon graduated with an astonishing 4.5 GPA. While at Brays Oaks, she excelled in a wealth of AP courses, participated in numerous clubs, including Student Council, National Honor Society, Girls Who Code and the Latinx Student Association and was a student-athlete. She contributed to the volleyball team, earning a Volleyball District Championship and Most Improved Player award. Her accolades include being a College Board AP Scholar and a Black Belt in Karate. Driven by curiosity, she embraced challenges, from coding to knitting, even establishing her own knitting business.
Noelia's remarkable achievements earned her a prestigious POSSE scholarship at Vanderbilt University, where she is pursuing a fully funded degree in Computer Science this fall. An extraordinary writer, her passion for computer science goes beyond coding to creating digital platforms that foster safe communities. Her dedication and bright spirit have inspired many, including her peers and college counselor.
Salutatorian: Brisa Morales
Brisa Morales is a distinguished QuestBridge scholar and Gates finalist who exemplified leadership through her grace, kindness and gratitude. A loyal friend and committed helper, she generously shares her time, knowledge and experience to uplift others. Her life's journey reflects the sacrifices others have made for her, and she honors these sacrifices by creating opportunities for herself and supporting others in their endeavors. Brisa will be attending Washington University in St. Louis this fall.
East End Secondary
Valedictorian: Melissa Ballesteros
Melissa Ballesteros has taken 12 AP classes and achieved the district's highest GPA of 4.56. She was active in the National Honor Society, SOLX, yearbook and softball. This year, she led a tortilla-making class, celebrating her culture and fostering community unity.
Melissa's AP English Literature teacher, Mr. Sheridan, praised her for her insightfulness and curiosity. She excelled in analyzing complex texts, earning a score of 4 on the AP exam and receiving the Thom Sheridan Writing Award. Melissa also won the Voyager Award for her outstanding work in AP English Language. In addition to her academic achievements, Melissa led over 70 Explorer volunteers at the Houston Rodeo Run Water Station. She plans to study bioengineering at Dartmouth College to bridge the gap between technology and healthcare, ensuring compassionate patient care.
Salutatorian: Adamaris Martinez
Adamaris Martinez is a driven student who consistently sought ways to contribute to her campus community. She maintained a 4.2 GPA, completed nine AP courses and was involved in SOLX, NHS and UT Health. Known for her organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines, Adamaris impressed her teachers with her professionalism and determination during the college application season.
Her mission to change her community inspired admiration. She plans to pursue a medical career focused on caring for people and challenging inequitable systems. Adamaris aims to advocate for inclusive healthcare, reduce healthcare costs for those with limited resources and address transportation barriers to advanced medical facilities.
Adamaris will attend Johns Hopkins University this fall on a full-ride scholarship to study pre-med, supported by scholarships from the Giving Gown Foundation and the Phi Beta Kappa Alumni Association. Johns Hopkins is gaining one of the best and brightest students in Adamaris Martinez, who is poised to make a significant impact on the world.
Fifth Ward Secondary
Valedictorian: Hector Garcia
Hector Garcia has distinguished himself through his relentless pursuit of excellence and his profound impact on those around him. A student in Julius Roitman's AP Spanish class three years ago, Hector's brilliance and dedication quickly became apparent. His insatiable curiosity led him to consistently seek extra work and ask detailed questions, pushing the boundaries of the curriculum.
Hector’s commitment to learning not only fueled his own success but also inspired his teachers to strive for greater heights. He credits his achievement in his first AP class and his perfect score on the AP exam to the guidance he received, though it was his own determination and passion that made a lasting impression. Hector’s drive to expand his knowledge and his desire for a better future for himself and his family have made him a role model for his peers and a source of inspiration for his educators.
Hector leaves behind a legacy of academic excellence, perseverance and a commitment to continuous improvement. His journey is a testament to the power of hard work and the impact of a curious mind. Hector will be attending the University of Houston in the fall.
Salutatorian: Yoltzi Bautista
Throughout her time at YES Prep Fifth Ward, Yoltzi Bautista has excelled academically, earning numerous accolades and honors. Her dedication and perseverance are evident in every project, exam and extracurricular activity she undertakes. Beyond academics, Yoltzi has shown exceptional character, becoming a trusted leader among her peers and offering support to those in need.
As one of Fifth Ward's top IMPACT students, Yoltzi actively engages with the school community, demonstrating a well-rounded and compassionate approach to her education. This fall, she will attend Rhodes College to major in political science, with plans to pursue law school and a career in law enforcement.

Valedictorian: Ashelin Medina
Ashelin Medina stands out for her exceptional character, dedication and leadership. Throughout her high school career, Ashelin demonstrated a steadfast commitment to personal growth, community engagement and academic excellence. Her leadership roles included serving as the vice president of student government and leading fundraising efforts for her class. As a YES Student Ambassador, she effectively represented her school and fostered connections with college representatives and visitors.
She also volunteered with the Food Bank and Kids Meal initiative, excelled with nine of the thirteen AP courses available to her and held an accounting internship showcasing her exceptional communication skills, organizational abilities and dedication to meeting deadlines.
Ashelin will continue her academic journey as a business major at Rice University, where she is poised to apply her skills and ambitions in the business world.
Salutatorian: Jasmine Hluz
Jasmine Hluz exemplifies resilience, determination and intellectual curiosity. She has shown unwavering commitment to academic excellence, personal growth and community service. Rising ranks from seventh in her sophomore year to second by her junior year, Jasmine's dedication and tenacity are evident. Her pursuit of computer programming, including attending coding camps, has solidified her career aspirations.
Jasmine's ability to overcome challenges is awe-inspiring. She has faced difficulties but emerged more decisive and empathetic, mastering difficult subjects like AP Calculus through self-study. Her extensive volunteer work at the Museum of Fine Arts, local elementary schools and the Folkloric Dance program at Baker Ripley demonstrates her dedication to service.
As president of Women's Empowerment, Jasmine has ensured every member's voice is heard. Jasmine epitomizes a college-ready scholar—driven, compassionate and intellectually curious. She will attend Washington University in St. Louis as a QuestBridge Scholar.
North Forest Secondary
Valedictorian: Ashley Onate
Ashley Onate flourished academically and personally. This past year, Ashley bravely stepped out of her comfort zone and applied to QuestBridge, fully understanding that matching with one of her top-choice schools would mean leaving home and making the sacrifice to be away from her family. Her hard work paid off when she was matched with Scripps College.
She is a student, daughter, sister, friend, Catechism teacher, Legend Ambassador and multiple-time Employee of the Month at Chick-fil-A. Despite these numerous roles, Ashley managed to earn the highest rank in her graduating class. She will continue her academic journey at Scripps College, where she plans to study business.
Ashley embodies the generosity and selflessness instilled in her by her uncle and grandmother. Her journey is a testament to her resilience, dedication and unwavering commitment to her family and community. As she moves forward, she will undoubtedly continue to be a passionate and influential force in everything she undertakes.
Salutatorian: Melanie Castro
Melanie Castro embodies dedication and quiet strength. Supported by her loving family, Melanie is a testament to the power of commitment and perseverance.
Despite her rigorous academic schedule, Melanie excels as an active member of the Varsity Girls Volleyball team and the National Honor Society. She approaches her challenging courses with humility and a strong work ethic, balancing time management and self-advocacy. Over time, Melanie has grown more comfortable seeking help, further enhancing her academic and personal growth.
Melanie's academic accomplishments, including excelling in courses like Pre-Calculus, AP US Government, AP World History and AP English Language, reflect her fast learning, reflectiveness and open-mindedness.

Northbrook High
Valedictorian: Carlynda Lam
Carlynda Lam embodies academic excellence, dedication and integrity. A standout student, Carlynda excelled in various AP classes, consistently remaining at the top of her class. Her remarkable ability to balance academic rigor with extracurricular involvement highlights her exceptional time management and organizational skills.
She contributed to campus culture through her active participation in theater arts and the National Honor Society. Her intellect is matched by her character, as she approached challenges with a positive attitude and an open mind, always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear. Her kindness, humility and genuine concern for others have earned her the respect and admiration of peers and teachers alike.
Carlynda will attend Oxford College of Emory University, majoring in psychology on the pre-med track. She aspires to become a highly successful surgeon.
Salutatorian: Atalia Ibarra
Atalia Ibarra embodies passion and determination. Her journey began with an interest in the National Security Language Initiatives for Youth (NSLI-Y), a prestigious federal language acquisition program. Fearlessly, Atalia applied and secured a summer placement in Korea, immersing herself in a new culture and language.
Upon her return, she inspired younger students with her experiences. Demonstrating foresight and commitment, Atalia pursued the NSLI-Y gap year program, researching colleges that allowed her to defer acceptance and scholarships. She received a full scholarship for the gap year program and deferred her acceptance to George Washington University.
Atalia’s journey from initial applications to standing as salutatorian showcases her growth and dedication. Her kindness, humility and courage inspire all, marking her incredible achievements and bright future.
Northline Secondary
Valedictorian: Abigail De Leon
Abigail De Leon exemplifies remarkable resilience and excellence. Abigail has transformed her academic journey into a testament to her dedication and hard work. Her ascent from the top 30% to the top of her class, achieving a 4.428 GPA and a SAT score of 1500, reflects her commitment to success. Her AP achievements, including all 4s and 5s, earned her the AP Scholar with Distinction title.
As the founding president of the student council, Abigail showcased exceptional leadership and dedication. Her contributions extended to various extracurriculars, such as the advanced math club, where she was recognized as the best overall, and her award-winning art, which has been displayed across Houston. Abigail has received over $2,000,000 in scholarship offers from prestigious institutions and will be attending Rice University’s engineering department, supported by substantial financial aid.
Despite facing personal challenges, including medical issues, family losses and caring for her niece and nephew during the pandemic, Abigail has remained steadfast and graceful. Her journey is a powerful example of what can be achieved through perseverance and hard work. Abigail’s achievements and resilience continue to inspire and set a high standard for future leaders.
Salutatorian: Gisselle Arriaza
Gisselle Arriaza embodies determination and excellence. Her journey is a testament to hard work, resilience and commitment. She achieved a 4.383 GPA while taking multiple AP classes. As captain of the volleyball team, she led them to the semi-finals with an undefeated record. Her leadership on the basketball team resulted in a historic 7-1 record and a district championship, advancing to the quarterfinals for the first time in school’s history.
Gisselle has contributed over 70 hours to community service and improved her SAT score from 1110 to 1330. Her recognitions include the AP Scholar with Honor Award, Varsity Girls Volleyball MVP, Varsity Girls Basketball MVP, All-Regional in both sports, and High School Student Athlete of the Year. As she prepares to embark on the next chapter at The University of Texas, she will continue to inspire and achieve greatness.
Northside Secondary
Valedictorian: Francisco Molina
Francisco Molina is a distinguished student who exemplified academic excellence and leadership. Francisco has maintained exceptional grades while pursuing a rigorous curriculum, including eight AP credits and AP Calculus BC, making him a standout in his class. His intellectual curiosity is matched by his commitment to innovation, aiming to become a mechanical engineer dedicated to creating sustainable and impactful technologies.
Outside the classroom, Francisco is an accomplished athlete, participating in the Cross-Country team and striving for the state championship. His dedication to his team and his role as a mentor highlights his leadership and supportive nature. Francisco is also an active member of the National Honor Society and has contributed to the community through volunteering at the Houston Food Bank.
With a keen interest in studying abroad, particularly in France, Francisco is poised to embrace diverse opportunities and broaden his horizons. Francisco will be attending Boston University in the fall.
Salutatorian: Morelia Garcia
Known for her exceptional dedication and strong work ethic, Morelia Garcia excelled in her academic endeavors, demonstrating remarkable perseverance and commitment. As an active member of the National Honor Society and Student Council, she contributed significantly to her school community, taking on leadership roles and supporting various activities.

Valedictorian: Adrian Araujo
Adrian Araujo has an impressive list of accomplishments. He is an alumnus of the South Africa School for Ethics and Global Leadership and the High Mountain Institute. Adrian is an Honor Charter Athletics League (HCAL) Regional Varsity Soccer Champion and the runner-up for the HCAL State Championship in Cross Country. He is also a talented trumpet player and folklorico dancer, as well as the vice president of the Spanish Honors Society. Adrian has earned the prestigious Gates Scholarship and is a Questbridge Scholar matched with Stanford University to pursue Aerospace Engineering.
Adrian's achievements reflect the sacrifices and support of his family. He moves forward as a testament to the values and love instilled in him by his parents. Known for his acts of service, Adrian shows up for his father, teammates and others, embodying a sense of teamwork and resilience. Adrian radiates happiness, abundance and authenticity, qualities that many strive for their entire lives. His leadership and strength in softness are truly commendable.

Glynnis Barron is known for her ability to set the tone and pace wherever she goes. Victor's hard work and perseverance paid off when he was named Southside's first Questbridge Scholar, matching with Rice University. As he embarks on his next chapter at Rice University, he stands as an example of excellence and inspiration for his peers at YES Prep Southside.

Jazmin Herrera is an exceptional student who consistently demonstrated outstanding academic achievements and a deep commitment to her community. Ashley also celebrated her cultural heritage through Ballet Folklorico; as a Student Ambassador, she welcomed new students and helped them navigate high school. Her involvement in the Queer Straight Alliance demonstrated her commitment to inclusivity and support for all students. Jhoseline's hard work culminated in her receiving over $345,000 in scholarships and grants, with admission offers from prestigious institutions such as Dartmouth College, New York University, Trinity University and the University of Pennsylvania. Her leadership and commitment extended beyond academics; she served as president of the National Honor Society, a member of the Queer Straight Alliance and Spanish Honor Society, and a Student Ambassador, making significant contributions to the school community.

Valedictorian: Gustavo Machin Kairuz
Gustavo “Tavi” Machin Kairuz, known for his adventurism, environmental heroism, adaptability and courage, participated in the High Mountain Institute semester abroad program and The School for Ethics and Global Leadership in London, where he displayed remarkable leadership qualities.
He excelled academically, ranking number one in his class and succeeding in rigorous AP courses. His enthusiasm for new challenges and his ability to guide peers through week-long expeditions highlighted his compassion and adaptability in unfamiliar environments. Beyond academics, Tavi has been a dedicated member of the orchestra since sixth grade and led his track team to numerous victories. His passion for environmental conservation led to the initiation of a recycling system at YES Prep West, leaving a lasting impact on his community as his peers continue the project in his absence.
As Tavi prepares to attend Stanford University as a Questbridge and Gates scholar, his dedication, courageous spirit and vision for positive change will undoubtedly inspire others on a global scale.

Adesewa Hassan is recognized for her ambition, passion, intelligence and unwavering determination. Her journey from Nigeria to the United States in pursuit of a brighter future is marked by her academic excellence and leadership.
Adesewa selflessly guided and supported her peers, setting a standard of excellence within the school community.
