Learning Beyond the Classroom
The ACE program is designed to offer activities and resources for students and parents that continue to stimulate learning beyond the regular school hours. Currently, the ACE program is offered across 10 YES Prep campuses.
The program, which is fully- funded, follows the YES Prep mission of student and family success. This mission allows the ACE program to offer activities to student and families that cover five components: Enrichment, Family and Parental Support, Academic Assistance, Behavioral Intervention and College and Workforce Readiness.
In this edition, we've decided to showcase the wonderful events that YES Prep Fifth Ward, West and East End were able to provide in the Spring semester!
YES Prep Fifth Ward
ACE Site Coordinator: Vanessa Flores
Sport Summer Camp
This year Fifth Ward ACE hosted one of the largest Sports Summer Camp. The camp included more than 40 students who participated in sports such as soccer and basketball. Aside from the sports camp, our summer programming included SAT Prep for students who wanted extra time to study and prepare for the college entrance exam. The student participation and engagement led to a successful summer program.
ACE Carnival
ACE Kicked off the summer program with an ACE carnival. In order to make this event a reality, ACE collaborated with Legacy Clinic, the campus culture, and leadership departments. The collaboration and support allowed the Carnival to be provided for parents, students, and the community. The ACE carnival was the perfect way to end the spring and start summer programming.
YES Prep West
ACE Site Coordinator: Jac'quese Hargrove
Summer Program
The Summer ACE program at West kicked off in June with a bang! For five weeks, students participated in a variety of activities – from cooking to robotics to dance! Close to 50 students regularly attended this year’s in-person summer program and those who participated were also provided with breakfast and lunch every day.
Check out the photos below. The following clubs from the summer: Chess, Health & Fitness, Robotics, Therapeutic Theater, Yoga and College Preparation!
Parent Appreciation Gift Bags
In May, as students returned their laptops and devices to campus, West took the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate our most important partners in this work – our West parents! Together, our Student Support Counselors (SSCs), ACE Coordinator and various students worked together to prepare over 800 Parent Appreciation Gift Bags to gift to our families. Within the bags, parents were provided with a West-branded car magnet and a special Tiff’s Treat cookie! Gift bags also contained information about Summer ACE, contact information for campus leadership, and a community agency list that families may use to access individual supports and address family needs.
YES Prep East End
ACE Site Coordinator: Martin Perez-Lopez
New Summer Experience Program
Students have been virtual for so long, so I wanted summer programming to be a fun way to destress from school day activities. Having Volleyball and Basketball athletes be able to mock what a student athlete does in college helped them have a college experience for in person programming. Nevertheless, Driver's Education was provided for students who wanted to get their driving permissions. The students enjoyed the program and look forward to the Fall semester!
Drive-thru Easter Basket
To close out Fall programming and start the summer, East End decided to provide a family enrichment event. Using social media and internal partnerships, the event was able to reach many families. For the event, parents were able to pick up a basket that was prepared by ACE. The basket contained everything a family would need to create an Easter egg hunt from the comfort of their home.
