Every great neighborhood deserves great schools.
The best ones do far more than teach children to read, write, and work through math problems. They light a spark of curiosity, nurture confidence, and give friendships the room to take root. They turn into gathering places for families, launchpads for young ambitions, and anchors for the community around them. Give a child the chance to learn, grow, and belong close to home, and the whole neighborhood rises with them.
That conviction is what inspires us as we prepare to open YES Prep Fifth Ward Elementary in Fall 2027.

Fifth Ward has always been a place shaped by resilience, history, and pride. Generation after generation, families have built their lives here and, in doing so, helped shape the culture and character of Houston. Today it's home to thousands of young children whose stories are only beginning and whose potential has no ceiling. We're honored to become part of that story.
That commitment reflects YES Prep's belief that all families should have the opportunity to excellent education close to home.
"Every family deserves access to a great public school, regardless of their zip code," said Carmen Darville, YES Prep Public Schools Chief Operating Officer. "Scaling forward means growing with purpose, not just size. YES Prep Fifth Ward Elementary is what that looks like—a meaningful investment in one of Houston's historic communities and a new pathway for students to thrive."
Bringing that vision to life begins with listening to and learning from the families who call Fifth Ward home.
"Fifth Ward families have been building this community for decades," says Norma Gonzalez, founding principal of YES Prep Fifth Ward Elementary. "Our job isn't to bring something to Fifth Ward, it's to build something with Fifth Ward. Every choice we make, from our classrooms to our curriculum, will reflect the hopes families hold for their children. I can't wait to meet the students who will walk through our doors."
When we open in Fall 2027, we'll welcome our founding class in pre-K (age 4), kindergarten, first grade, and second grade. From there, we'll add one grade each year until we serve students all the way through fifth, growing right alongside the children in our care. But the journey won't end there.

As part of the YES Prep Public Schools family, Fifth Ward Elementary is only the first chapter of a path that stretches all the way to high school graduation. From a child's very first day of pre-K to the moment they cross the stage, diploma in hand, our promise stays the same: a strong academic foundation, relationships that matter, and the support every student needs to find their passions and build the future they imagine.
We believe the earliest years of learning shape everything that follows. That's why our pre-K program is designed to be both joyful and academically enriching, giving children ages four and five the confidence to find their voice, express their ideas, advocate for themselves and discover new talents as they prepare for kindergarten. Through our transitional bilingual model, students develop strong skills in both Spanish and English, building toward full biliteracy while receiving the academic foundation they'll carry through elementary school, high school and beyond. We also embrace an inclusive approach to learning, ensuring every child, including students with special needs, receives the individualized support and rigorous instruction needed to thrive.

That's what makes this moment so meaningful for our founding families. Choosing us now means joining a community ready to walk beside your child for years to come. Together, we'll mark the first day of school, new friendships, hard-won milestones, and one day, a high school graduation.
Over the coming year, we'll share updates as construction takes shape, introduce the educators bringing this vision to life, and invite families and neighbors to be part of it at every turn. Long before the first bell rings, we'll be building the relationships and the community that make a school feel like home.
