TIA – Level IV Teacher Spotlight Series: Carlazeli Garcia, TIA Exemplary – YES Prep Airline Elementary
Our Teacher Incentive Allotment-Level IV Teacher Spotlight Series continues. Our next spotlight is Carlazeli Garcia, with a TIA Exemplary designation at YES Prep Airline Elementary.
I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. As a child, I had incredible educators who inspired me, and to this day, I still keep in touch with them. My journey in education came full circle when I returned to YES Prep—first as a student at North Central, then as a first-generation graduate, and now as an educator shaping young minds at Airline Elementary. After earning a scholarship to Austin College and completing my master’s degree, I reached out to one of my former teachers, who was working as a reading interventionist. That connection led me to start my career in education, and when YES Prep began expanding into elementary schools, I knew I had to return. I couldn’t be happier with that decision.
Creating a Culture of High Expectations
One of my greatest strengths as an educator is building a positive classroom climate where students feel challenged and supported. From the first day of school, I set high expectations and consistently reinforce them through praise and encouragement. My students know what is expected of them at all times, and we work together with urgency, ensuring that every moment is an opportunity for learning and growth.
I also focus on careful planning and adaptability to ensure my students receive the best possible instruction. By actively monitoring student engagement and analyzing exit tickets, I adjust my lessons as needed. If students are struggling with a concept, I modify their morning work and create custom small group instruction tailored to their needs. I differentiate learning by allowing students to take ownership of their education, helping them develop independence and confidence in their abilities. My ultimate goal is to provide them with the tools they need to succeed on their own.
Bringing Innovation and Opportunity to YES Prep
Beyond the classroom, I am always seeking ways to support my students and enhance their learning experiences. Over the years, I have had nine DonorsChoose projects funded, providing my students with valuable resources that make a lasting impact on their education.
Being part of the Teacher Advisory Council (TAC) has also been transformative for me as an educator. Through TAC, I learned about the Fund for Teachers program, which gave me the opportunity to travel abroad to Europe and discover new techniques to help my students be more successful. As a representative on Airline’s first TAC Committee, I hope to bring more awareness to programs like this and contribute to teacher retention initiatives, ensuring that educators feel supported and valued in their careers.
Why YES Prep?
YES Prep is a place that recognizes and rewards educators for their hard work and dedication. The Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) provides well-deserved recognition for teachers, and YES Prep offers numerous opportunities for career growth. I am proud to be part of a school that invests in its educators and continuously seeks to elevate student success.
From being a YES Prep student to becoming a YES Prep educator, my journey has come full circle. Now, I have the privilege of shaping the next generation, just as my teachers did for me.
