At YES Prep, we celebrate the unique strengths, passions, and perseverance that every student brings to their journey. One of those students is Alejandra Yepez, class of 2025 graduate of YES Prep Fifth Ward Secondary and the newest recipient of the Gio’s Purpose Foundation scholarship.
About the Gio’s Purpose Foundation
The Gio’s Purpose Foundation was created in memory of Giovanni Zaleta, a 2020 graduate of YES Prep Fifth Ward Secondary. He had a deep love for science and dreamed of pursuing a career in neuroscience or another STEAM-related field. His motivation was personal, driven by his younger brother, Johnny, who lost the ability to walk due to an accident. Ultimately, Giovanni hoped to help him one day through medical research.
Tragically, just months after graduating, Giovanni’s life was cut short by gun violence at the age of 18. In the wake of this loss, his family established the Gio’s Purpose Foundation to honor his legacy and support students who face adversity but remain determined to succeed.
The foundation provides scholarships and resources to students from underserved communities who are driven by a sense of purpose and a desire to make a difference. Its mission is to turn grief into action by investing in student success and uplifting the communities Giovanni cared about most.
A Student Who Embodies the Mission

Alejandra Yepez reflects that mission in every way. Known for her resilience, empathy and determination, Alejandra stood out not only for her academic drive but also for her commitment to others.
“Alejandra has always been dedicated to her work,” said Ja’Qualan Keal, director of college counseling at YES Prep Fifth Ward. “What really stood out was her ability to persevere, build relationships and show compassion. She’s the kind of student who lifts those around her.”
Alejandra received guidance through the scholarship application process from her college counselor, Mr. Terrell, and her Seminar instructor, Ms. Ballinger. Together, they ensured she felt confident and supported every step of the way.
This fall, Alejandra will begin her college journey at Texas A&M University. The Gio’s Purpose scholarship will help cover essential needs, from school supplies to housing costs, ensuring she starts strong and stays focused.
A Legacy That Lives On
“We were inspired to choose Alejandra because she shares similar dreams and values as Giovanni,” said Elizabeth Brambila, CEO of the Gio’s Purpose Foundation. “Like Gio, she wants to make a meaningful impact. Supporting her allows us to see his legacy continue through others.”
Her goal is to tell young people facing adversity that it can actually give you the tools to fulfill your dreams. She believes that with resilience, you can overcome challenges and achieve anything you set your mind to.
The Gio’s Purpose Foundation continues to transform loss into opportunity, empowering students like Alejandra to carry forward the legacy of a young man who dreamed of changing lives and, through their journeys, still does.
