Motherhood is a unique journey that is filled with love, challenges, and profound growth. As we celebrate Mother’s Day this year, we take a moment to honor the incredible mothers within the YES Prep community—whether they are parents, teachers, staff, or mentors who shape the lives of our students. These women are an essential part of our mission to nurture and develop the future leaders of tomorrow. Today, we’re featuring three amazing Family Association representatives who share their experiences, reflections, and the important role YES Prep plays in their family’s lives.
Patti Santos, mother of a YES Prep East End Elementary student
For Patti Santos, being a mother is about embracing a complex, ever-evolving role where every day brings something new. “Being a mom means wearing many hats—caretaker, nurturer, guide, and so much more,” Patti shares with warmth and conviction. She recognizes that motherhood is about balancing the needs of her children with her own aspirations, and this delicate dance between selflessness and self-care is a constant journey.
Through her children, Patti has rediscovered the beauty of life’s simplest joys. “I’ve learned from them the importance of enjoying life, having fun, and tapping into my creativity,” she says, reflecting on how her children’s boundless imagination has reignited her own. They have taught her to innovate and dream, not just for their future, but for hers as well.
When it came time to choose a school for her children, Patti knew she wanted something extraordinary. “I chose YES Prep because of its unmatched commitment to college readiness, academic excellence, and community leadership. But what truly sets YES Prep apart is its unwavering focus on the whole child,” Patti explains. “Here, we don’t just prepare our children for college; we prepare them for life. I’ve had the privilege of being part of this remarkable community, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to help shape it. I always recommend YES Prep to everyone I meet because I want others to experience the same incredible education and support.”
Emilse Olivas, mother of a YES Prep Hobby Elementary student
For Emilse Olivas, being a mom means providing unwavering support, love, and guidance while creating a safe haven for her son, Rito. “Being a mom is the most rewarding experience of my life,” Emilse says with a smile that can be felt through her words. Her connection with Rito goes beyond the typical mother-child relationship; it’s built on deep love, trust, and a profound understanding of how quickly time passes.
“The most valuable lesson Rito has taught me is how important it is to be present,” Emilse reflects, a note of gratitude in her voice. “We live in such a fast-paced world, and it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life. But Rito has shown me that the little moments—the ones where we just sit together, laugh, or share a quiet moment—are the ones that truly matter.”
Emilse’s choice to entrust YES Prep with Rito’s education was driven by a desire for a community that would embrace her family and support them every step of the way. “I wanted a place that wasn’t just about academic success but about finding a village—a place where my family and I could be supported,” Emilse says. “At YES Prep, I found that. Rito is surrounded by teachers who care deeply about his success, his well-being, and his future. They don’t just teach him; they believe in him, and that belief is something I carry with me every day.”
Mary Guerrero, mother of a YES Prep East End Secondary student
For Mary Guerrero, being a mother means giving a piece of yourself that can never be returned—a gift of love, care, and deep sacrifice. “Being a mom is about giving a piece of your heart to someone else forever,” Mary shares. “It’s a journey that comes with joy, but also challenges. The love is deep, but it’s also full of sacrifice and commitment.”
Through her own children, Mary has learned the power of unconditional love. “The love my children give is pure and teaches me how to give without expecting anything in return,” she says, a quiet wisdom in her voice. It is in those moments of selflessness—those moments where love is offered freely and without hesitation—that Mary finds the true meaning of motherhood.
As an active parent volunteer and Family Association representative, Mary has experienced firsthand how YES Prep works hand-in-hand with families to foster a brighter future for students. “YES Prep believes in potential—our children’s potential, but also the potential of the families and communities that surround them,” Mary reflects. “Through my involvement, I’ve seen how YES Prep partners with families to ensure that every student is not just prepared academically, but prepared for life. The support we receive here is filled with heart and purpose, and that makes all the difference.”
