From serving her country in the U.S. Navy to serving students in the classroom, Elizabeth Gooden has built her career on discipline, compassion, and connection. A Spanish I and III teacher at YES Prep Northline Secondary, Elizabeth has been recognized as a Level IV educator for two consecutive years, consistently meeting district goals in both Unit and Common Assessments.

Her path to teaching began with a lifelong commitment to growth and service. After graduating from MacArthur High School in Houston, Elizabeth joined the United States Navy, where she developed the discipline and leadership skills that now define her approach in the classroom. Following her military service, she earned a degree in sociology with a minor in psychology from Sam Houston State University, working as a licensed hairdresser to support herself and her family through college. These experiences taught her resilience, adaptability, and the importance of connecting with people from all walks of life, qualities she brings to her work with students every day.

Elizabeth’s introduction to YES Prep came through her niece, a student at YES Prep North Central. Attending her niece’s Senior Signing Day in 2017 became a defining moment. Seeing the joy and pride as students announced their college choices inspired Elizabeth to join YES Prep. “I knew I wanted to be part of a mission-driven community that celebrates students and empowers their futures,” she shared.
Her decision to become an educator was also shaped by the mentors and role models who influenced her own journey. Elizabeth credits her teachers and coaches with instilling in her a lifelong love of learning, and she draws inspiration from her mother, who worked as a Special Education TA. “Watching her care for her students and celebrate their growth showed me what it means to teach with heart,” Elizabeth reflected.

Now in her own classroom, Elizabeth leads with empathy and consistency. She creates a space where students feel seen, valued, and safe to take risks. Her teaching style emphasizes collaboration and structure, helping students thrive both academically and personally. One of her proudest experiences has been supporting a student who once struggled with academic and emotional challenges. Through patience and trust, she watched that student grow in confidence and begin to thrive, an experience that reaffirmed her belief in the transformative power of connection.
For Elizabeth, YES Prep stands out because of its strong sense of community and shared mission. She values being part of a network where both student and teacher achievements are celebrated and where professional growth is encouraged. “YES Prep challenges and supports you to grow both personally and professionally,” she said. “It’s a place where the work truly matters.”
Elizabeth’s journey from the Navy to the classroom is a testament to her dedication, resilience, and unwavering belief in the potential of every student.
Congratulations to Ms. Elizabeth Gooden on being recognized as a Level IV educator for the second consecutive year. Her commitment to connection, growth, and student success exemplifies the excellence and heart that define YES Prep educators across our district.
