At YES Prep, leadership is about more than just academics—it’s about empowering students to embrace their identities and recognize their potential.  

Elizabeth Valencia, the Manager of Student Enrichment at YES Prep Southwest Secondary, has dedicated five years to making this vision a reality. Starting as a history teacher at Southwest in 2017, Elizabeth now plays a crucial role in shaping the future of Latinx leadership by co-leading the YES Prep LatinX Leadership Summit, an event created to uplift, inspire, and connect the next generation of Latinx leaders. 

What is the YES Prep LatinX Leadership Summit? 

The LatinX Leadership Summit, co-led by Elizabeth, brings together Latinx students, leaders, and community members for meaningful discussions, workshops and networking opportunities. The summit focuses on leadership development, cultural identity, and community empowerment, offering Latinx students, emerging leaders, professionals, and allies a chance to learn from one another, connect with mentors, and initiate positive change. Elizabeth explains, “The summit is a platform for participants to collaborate on initiatives that uplift the Latinx community while amplifying the voices of underrepresented groups.” 

Elizabeth's Commitment to Empowering Underrepresented Voices 

Elizabeth’s involvement in the summit stems from a deep passion for creating opportunities for underrepresented communities, especially Latinx students. She sees the summit as a powerful platform to amplify Latinx voices, promote leadership and build supportive networks. “I wanted to contribute to empowering the next generation of leaders—our students—and to help build a stronger, more inclusive community,” Elizabeth shares. “It’s about making sure our students feel seen and heard, and that they understand the potential they have to make an impact.” 

Why Programming Like This Matters 

According to Elizabeth, programs like the LatinX Summit are essential for fostering leadership skills, cultural pride, and a strong sense of community among youth. She emphasizes the importance of representation, explaining, “It’s crucial for our youth to see themselves in positions of influence. When they do, they can envision their own potential.

By engaging students in leadership development and encouraging them to challenge systemic inequalities, events like the LatinX Summit not only prepare students to become leaders in their own communities but also equip them with the confidence to contribute meaningfully to society.

The LatinX Summit promises to have a lasting impact on participating students, helping them recognize the power of their voices, develop essential leadership skills, and strengthen their sense of identity and purpose. The opportunity to connect with diverse role models and access new opportunities can expand students' vision of what’s possible for their futures. 

But the impact doesn’t stop with the students. For Elizabeth, being involved with the summit is equally transformative. “Seeing the students’ growth and enthusiasm for leadership is incredibly inspiring,” she says. “It motivates me to continue advocating for inclusive opportunities and reminds me of the importance of giving back to the community.” 

Fostering Understanding Through Identity Awareness 

Elizabeth believes that providing students with opportunities to learn about different identities is key to fostering empathy, inclusivity, and open-mindedness. She explains, “Exposing students to diverse experiences, cultures, and perspectives helps break down stereotypes and allows them to value their own identities while respecting others.”  

This kind of learning creates more compassionate and thoughtful individuals. It helps students understand that their unique perspectives are valuable and equips them with the critical thinking skills they need to thrive in diverse environments, both in school and beyond.”
