Families are essential partners in helping students succeed in and out of the classrooms. Following this motto, our Family Association Representatives (FARs) bring this belief to life by strengthening the connection between school and home. This month, we are proud to spotlight Emilse Olivas, a FAR at YES Prep Hobby Elementary who has turned her commitment to family engagement into a new role on campus as Campus Operations Coordinator. 

A Motivation to Connect 

When asked why she joined the Family Association, Olivas said she wanted to help build the kind of village every child deserves. “I believe that when families and schools work together, students thrive,” she shared. “By joining the Family Association, I saw an opportunity to help create a supportive, united community where every child feels seen, supported, and empowered to succeed.” 

Her involvement not only strengthened her child’s school experience but also changed her own perspective as a parent. “It’s helped me become more aware of how much families and schools can accomplish when we work together. I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for the diverse needs of our school community.” 

Growth Through Leadership 

Serving as a FAR gave Olivas valuable skills that prepared her for new opportunities. She credits the experience with helping her transition into her role as Campus Operations Coordinator. “I gained confidence in leading meetings and encouraging parent involvement, which now helps me coordinate effectively with both families and school leadership,” she explained. “More importantly, I learned the power of collaboration and how building relationships creates a stronger school culture.” 

One of her proudest moments came when helping organize family events at Hobby Elementary. For her, these gatherings were about more than just food and fun. “It brought families together outside of the classroom, raised funds for our school, and showed how strong our school community really is when we all come together. Seeing so many students, parents, and staff enjoying themselves—and knowing I played a part—was really meaningful. It reminded me why staying involved matters.” 

Carrying the Work Forward 

Now as a staff member, Olivas continues to support family engagement from a different perspective. She works to ensure that every family who enters the front office feels welcomed and connected. “Whether it’s through a positive front office experience, timely communication, or access to resources, I want families to feel supported from the moment they walk in,” she said. 

She also remains active in Family Association events and even helps with student recruitment, making sure families know what makes YES Prep a strong choice. Her advice to parents considering joining the Family Association is simple: “Don’t hesitate—get involved! It’s not about having tons of free time—it’s about showing up in whatever way you can and being part of a team that truly cares about making the school stronger.” 

Looking back, Olivas says YES Prep has shaped her in countless ways as both a parent and an employee. “I’ve found a sense of community, connection, and purpose by working with other families and helping build the strong village our kids need to succeed.”
