For many students, career aspirations begin as abstract ideas.

They may know they want to work in healthcare, technology, or law. They may say they want to be an engineer, a journalist, or an attorney. But without access to professional environments, mentors, and real-world experience, those ambitions can feel distant.

Over time, distance can turn into doubt.

At YES Prep, we reject the idea that career access should depend on who a student knows or where they grow up. Through Ignite, our career exposure and exploration program, we treat access as a skill to be built and opportunity as something to be intentionally expanded.

Research published by the American Educational Research Association highlights why that matters. The study showed that when students from low-income households gain meaningful access to programs, extracurriculars, and career exposure, their likelihood of graduating from a four-year college rises from 10 percent to 50 percent. That same increase in access is associated with a $10,000 increase in annual income by the age of 26.

Exposure changes outcomes. Ignite is designed to make that exposure consistent, structured, and equitable.

Career Exploration Is Embedded, Not Optional

Ignite is a key component of YES Prep’s college initiatives model. It integrates career-connected learning into seminar curriculum and schoolwide programming across our secondary schools.

Students do not explore careers in isolation. They engage directly with professionals, participate in hands-on simulations and step inside industries that shape Houston’s economy.

“ When students step into professional spaces early, they begin to believe not only that they can pursue these paths, but that they belong in them.” said Delaney Hinnant, director of college and career access. “That shift from possibility to ownership is powerful.”

That sense of belonging is foundational. When students can see themselves in professional spaces, planning becomes purposeful.

Access Across Industries

Ignite spans multiple industries, ensuring students encounter a range of high-growth and high-impact careers in our secondary schools.

Through Technolochicas, Latina students at East End, Fifth Ward, North Central , Northside, and Southwest engage in hands-on technology programming and connect with Latina professionals in STEM fields. Representation and mentorship work together to build both technical skill and confidence.

At West and Gulfton, students participate in the Explore Club through the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship Houston Galveston Chapter. Medical and graduate school fellows lead sessions focused on healthcare, public service and leadership, guiding students toward informed career decisions.

Students across Southside, Southeast, Southwest, Northside, North Forest, Northline, Northwest, North Central, and White Oak participated in the Tomorrow’s Attorney Pipeline Program sponsored by the Houston Young Lawyers Association. Through direct engagement with practicing attorneys, students gain clarity on the path to law school and the legal profession.

BridgeYear Career Test Drives provided students at Fifth Ward, Gulfton, Hobby, North Forest, Northside, Northwest, Southside and West with interactive simulations in healthcare, technology and skilled trades. These experiences expand awareness of high-growth, high-wage careers, including pathways that do not require a traditional four-year degree.

Students from East End, Fifth Ward and Northside participated in the Longhorn Engineering Summer Camp hosted by The University of Texas at Austin. Through immersive engineering projects and direct engagement with university faculty, students gain early exposure to STEM fields and strengthen their confidence in pursuing engineering careers.

Career exploration, in this model, is not theoretical. It is experiential.

Earning Credentials After Graduation

Ignite does more than introduce students to careers. In some pathways, it accelerates them toward professional credentials.

Through our partnership with Houston Methodist, seniors participated in a competitive, paid patient care assistant externship program. Students receive hands-on clinical training and complete coursework that allowed them to sit for the certified nursing assistant exam before entering college.

This year, YES Prep students represented 38 of the 90 applicants citywide, with six seniors selected for the program.

“Earning a credential before graduation is powerful,” Hinnant said. “It allows students to enter college or the workforce with both knowledge and credibility, which can significantly change their trajectory.”

Acceleration matters. Early access matters. Credentials matter.

Career Week: Extending the Network

Ignite programming is reinforced through annual Career Week experiences across our secondary campuses.

Industry leaders and companies participate in panels and workshops, sharing professional journeys and practical advice. Students also step inside workplaces across Houston.

Some toured the offices of Kirkland and Ellis, gaining firsthand insight into the legal profession. Others attended the HCC Expo to explore the STEM workforce and postsecondary options. Students also visited KPRC 2 to experience broadcast journalism and media production in action.

These experiences send a consistent message: professional spaces are accessible, and YES Prep students belong in them.

A System Designed for Opportunity

Research makes it clear that opportunity accumulation changes life trajectories. Ignite reflects YES Prep’s commitment to ensuring students graduate not only academically prepared, but professionally informed.

We prepare students to earn acceptance letters. We also prepare them to navigate industries, build networks, and enter careers with clarity and confidence.

Career exploration at YES Prep is not an add-on. It is embedded into the secondary experience because access should be intentional.

Through Ignite, exposure becomes experience. Experience becomes confidence. And confidence becomes opportunity. To read more about our Ignite program, click here.
