March is Child Nutrition Month, a time to highlight the critical role that healthy meals and active lifestyles play in student success. At YES Prep, our Child Nutrition team is committed to ensuring every student has access to nutritious meals that fuel both academic achievement and physical well-being. As part of this commitment, YES Prep Southside Secondary partnered with Fuel Up to host a dynamic wellness and fitness event on March 6, 2025.

The event brought together more than 200 students, staff, and community members to celebrate health, wellness, and physical activity. Made possible through the NFL FLAG-In-School program—which provides free flag football kits to schools nationwide—the event promoted teamwork, movement, and a commitment to lifelong wellness.

Maria Alvarado, Child Nutrition’s assistant, highlighted the program’s impact, "At YES Prep, we believe that student success goes beyond the classroom; it starts with proper nutrition, physical activity, and a strong sense of community. Through our partnership with Fuel Up, we are not only providing students with nutritious meals but also creating opportunities for them to stay active and engaged in their well-being. Seeing students come together, compete, and celebrate healthy habits is a powerful reminder of how wellness plays a vital role in academic achievement and lifelong success."

Fuel Up and Its Mission

Fuel Up, created by America’s Dairy Farmers, partners with schools and communities to provide resources that help students make healthier choices and create lasting wellness habits. The program focuses on five key areas:

  • Promoting Healthy Eating: Encouraging students to consume nutritious foods, including dairy, fruits and vegetables.

  • Encouraging Physical Activity: Collaborating with the NFL Play 60 initiative to get students engaged in daily movement.

  • Supporting School Wellness Initiatives: Offering grants and funding to improve nutrition programs and expand breakfast options.

  • Educating on Sustainability: Teaching students about food sources, sustainability practices and environmental stewardship.

  • Empowering Students: Providing leadership opportunities for students to take charge of their health and advocate for wellness improvements in their schools.

With classroom-ready educational materials, funding opportunities and community-driven projects, Fuel Up inspires both students and educators to build a healthier future together.

"Healthy eating and exercise formula is essential for an optimal lifestyle and health. Fuel Up provides the opportunity to receive both: nutritionally balanced meals at school and this event provided physical activity. Seeing the students' response was very gratifying," said Georgia Lopez, Child Nutrition’s operations specialist.

Event Highlights

One of the most meaningful moments from the Fuel Up event was the sense of community and celebration it fostered. Students participated in a flag football game, showcasing teamwork and sportsmanship. After the game, Houston City Council Member Carolyn Evans-Shabazz, representative of District D – The District of Destination, recognized the student athletes, presented certificates and issued a proclamation in honor of the event.

Beyond the field, the event featured special guests, including Houston City Councilwoman Dr. Carolyn Evans-Shabazz and her staff, YWCA community leaders and radio personalities J-Mac and Jas from 97.9 The Box. Their presence underscored the importance of partnerships in promoting student wellness and engagement.

The Fuel Up event at YES Prep was more than just a flag football game—it was a celebration of wellness, community, and the importance of providing our students with the healthy meals and physical activity they need to succeed. By fueling their bodies with nutritious food and keeping them active, we are setting them up for a lifetime of health and achievement. We look forward to continuing this initiative and making wellness a cornerstone of the YES Prep experience." -Dr. Jessica Howell, Director of Child Nutrition Program

Looking Ahead

The Child Nutrition team plans to continue applying for Fuel Up grants to sustain the initiative, providing students with ongoing opportunities for physical activity and community engagement.

“At YES Prep, we are committed to encouraging our students to consume nutritious meals and maintain a well-balanced diet. It is not solely about what you eat, but also about engaging in daily physical activity. This event served to raise awareness among our students about the importance of taking care of their bodies,” said Bryan Castillo, Child Nutrition’s operations specialist.

As Hilda Centeno, a dedicated team member and mother, shared: "As a mother, these programs are very important for the students and their families. I am so thankful for the nutritious meals my kids received each day, especially during the pandemic. The program supported us with meals delivered to our home every day. I am so happy to see so many students enjoying the meals they receive each day at school and encourage them to participate in this kind of event.”

By aligning with YES Prep’s commitment to student success, this partnership ensures that students are well-fed, active and supported—both academically and physically—while also empowering families to build healthier lifestyles together.

Impact of YES Prep’s Child Nutrition Program

Child Nutrition Month is a time to celebrate the hard work and dedication of those who ensure students have access to healthy meals every day. The YES Prep Child Nutrition team plays a crucial role in supporting students and families by providing nutritious meals that help students stay focused and energized for academic and extracurricular activities. The program promotes healthy eating habits, alleviates food insecurity and fosters a sense of community.

"Programs like this are deeply important to me. When I was struggling, the school provided my kids with meals and support, allowing them to focus on their schoolwork. Seeing these students’ smiles made participating in the event worth it!" said Maria Carlos, manager Of Child Nutrition Operations, reflecting on the event’s significance.

Through the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), YES Prep ensures that all students receive free breakfast and lunch, closing gaps in access to healthy meals and reducing financial stress for families.

As we come to the end of Child Nutrition Month, we recognize that these initiatives go beyond just meals. They represent a commitment to student success, well-being and a healthier future for all. Thank you to our Child Nutrition team for making a difference every day!
