My name is Daniella Diaz and I’m in eighth grade at YES Prep Southeast.
How did you learn about YES Prep’s 2019 Holiday Card Contest?
My friends and I are in a group chat together and they are in the art class. I was helping them, giving them ideas for the drawing, and that’s when I was motivated to ask Ms. Crancer if I could participate in the contest.
Tell us about your holiday card.
I decided to do a drawing with kids throwing snowballs to feel more “school” and “student” related, and give a more Christmas vibe to it. I recently bought these watercolors, and I’ve always wanted to try it out. I’ve been looking through Google and Pinterest, to give me ideas, to help me.
How did you learn that you won the contest?
I was with some friends when Ms. Crancer told me, “Don’t freak out but you won.” I didn’t know a simple doodle would get me here, winning the competition. My parents were really excited when I told them I won. My mom quickly messaged my whole family.
Have you always loved to draw?
I’ve been drawing since fifth grade. It’s a part of me. I love doing it. My grandpa is an artist. It passed down from generation to generation.
Do you see art in the future?
Art started off as a hobby, and it’s a part of me. I love drawing people, I’m trying to do more dynamic poses. Trying to draw animals with people. I also play clarinet, and I really enjoy it. My favorite class is band. I love the community that’s in band. The relationships and friendships. I think that music would also be something I’d love to do in the future.
What brought you to YES Prep Southeast?
Our neighbor has a kid that comes to YES Prep. My mom noticed that YES Prep is a small community and that it is from sixth to 12th grade. She liked that everything was connected. I have a brother who is in ninth grade who also attends YES Prep.
What has your experience at YES Prep Southeast been?
It has been an adventure. I’m looking forward to more years in this school. It is a great opportunity to be here. I learn about colleges and you can find out what you like. I want to be a lot of things when I grow up. I don’t have a plan yet. I’m still figuring out what I want to do.
Who is your favorite teacher?
I don’t have a favorite teacher because they are all great. They are always there for you.
What are you thankful for?
I am thankful for my friends that have been supporting me from the start. My family has been giving me ideas and supporting me to be in the actual competition.
