For Kabrina White, an interventionist at YES Prep North Rankin Elementary, that work begins with literacy and a deep-rooted commitment to ensuring every child has access to opportunity.

A Foundation Built on Literacy and Purpose

With more than two decades in education, Kabrina’s journey to YES Prep was intentional. Her career has been grounded in the understanding that literacy can change the trajectory of a student’s life. She has seen it happen firsthand—how the right instruction, delivered with care and precision, can course-correct a child’s future. When she became familiar with YES Prep’s mission, she recognized a natural alignment with her own purpose and made the decision to continue her work in a place that prioritizes both excellence and service. 

“Building students [and] building families is hard work, but it is necessary work,” she shared. At YES Prep, she found a community equally committed to doing that work well.

Her inspiration to teach is deeply personal. School was where she felt safe, where she experienced success, and where educators helped her see what was possible even in the face of challenges. That foundation was strengthened at home, where her father instilled a belief that continues to shape her approach today: remove the word “can’t” from her vocabulary. That mindset now lives at the center of her classroom.

Teaching with Belief, Leading with Heart

Kabrina teaches with a high standard. She treats every student as if they were her own child. That belief shapes every instructional decision she makes. She holds her students to high expectations, not by lowering the bar when they struggle, but by leaning in, offering feedback, scaffolds, and multiple opportunities to help them reach success. She communicates her belief in them through consistency and honest accountability, ensuring that every student knows they are capable, even when the work is difficult.

A Classroom Where Possibility Takes Root

That belief comes to life most clearly in the relationships she builds with her students. One second-grade student from last school year stands out as a powerful example. He entered her classroom facing both academic and personal challenges, with a home life that made school a necessary place of stability. Over time, it became clear that the classroom was more than a learning environment; it was a safe haven. Through intentional support and unwavering expectations, he began to grow. By mid-year, he had already surpassed his end-of-year literacy goals, but his growth extended beyond academics. He gained confidence, improved his behavior, and began to see himself differently.

The moment that captured it all came during a school assembly. After receiving recognition, he ran straight to Kabrina, wrapped her in a hug, and said, “Thank you, Mrs. White!” It was a simple moment, but one that carried the weight of everything she believes about teaching. Reflecting on it, she shared, “Little did he know, I should have thanked him for being proof that anything is possible if we simply try.”

That exchange is a reflection of Kabrina’s impact on student outcomes and on student identity. It is the result of a classroom where students are seen, supported, and pushed to reach their full potential.
