This week’s spotlight highlights Jansin Cuebillas, a Level IV educator at YES Prep North Central Elementary. Originally from the Philippines, Jansin joined YES Prep in 2022, bringing with him a passion for education and a mission to empower students through equity and opportunity.
A Journey of Passion and Purpose
Jansin's path to YES Prep reflects his courage and determination to make a global impact through education. Before joining YES Prep, he had an offer to teach in Shanghai, China, but the opportunity was derailed by COVID-19 restrictions. In 2021, he moved to the United States to accept YES Prep’s invitation, overcoming initial hesitation about the leap into a new country.
Now in his seventh year in education, Jansin expresses gratitude for the opportunity to teach at YES Prep, describing it as a community that celebrates diversity and fosters growth. “This experience has solidified my passion for teaching and shown me how valued my contributions are within the school community,” he says.
Empowering Students Through Education
Jansin’s teaching philosophy revolves around the belief that education is not a one-size-fits-all system. He emphasizes tailoring instruction to meet each student's unique needs and fostering a lifelong love of learning.
“My ambition is rooted in the understanding that every student deserves access to opportunities that help them succeed,” he shares. For Jansin, teaching extends beyond imparting knowledge; it’s about inspiring curiosity and empowering students to reach their full potential.
Strategies for Success
As an international educator, Jansin brings cultural sensitivity and self-awareness to his teaching. He credits YES Prep’s inclusive and supportive environment with helping him thrive.
“Being an effective educator goes beyond delivering instruction; it’s about the profound impact you have on students’ lives,” Jansin explains. His approach includes advocating for his students, holding himself to high standards, and continuously improving his instructional practices.
Building a Supportive Community
Jansin attributes much of his success to the strong relationships he has built with his school leaders and colleagues. Special shoutouts go to Michelle, Jonathan, Jamie, Liz, Diana, Tammy, Lauren, and Natalia for their mentorship and unwavering support.
“The guidance and collaboration of my team empower me to take on challenges, refine my teaching methods, and grow professionally. Their mentorship inspires my confidence and deepens my commitment to student success,” he shares.
Why YES Prep?
For Jansin, YES Prep’s mission aligns perfectly with his values as an educator. “YES Prep is the place to teach because our mission and vision focus not only on academic achievement but also on equity, opportunity, and community empowerment. These values are at the heart of effective and inspiring education,” he says.
