YES Prep is currently hiring for the 2021-2022 school year. For our future staff and teachers considering joining our YES Prep Northline Secondary family, we wanted to give you a glimpse into Northline and introduce you to the school’s principal.
YES Prep Northline Secondary, home of the Revolutionaries, was founded in in 2017 as YES Prep’s seventeenth campus. Located in the Northline neighborhood north of 610, YES Prep Northline currently serves grades sixth through ninth and will be a full-grown school with sixth through twelfth grade in the 2023-2024 school year.
Meet Brittany McGruder, founding principal
Previously, Brittany McGruder served as a founding team member of both YES Prep Hoffman and YES Prep Northbrook Middle, where she worked as a teacher, Grade Level Chair, Dean of Instruction, and Director of Academics. Brittany joined YES Prep in 2012 after teaching science at Fondren Middle as a Teach for America corps member. She graduated with a degree in business from The University of Tennessee at Martin in 2009.
Northline Secondary’s school culture and goals
How long have you been the principal of Northline Secondary, and can you summarize what has your experience been during that time?
This is my fourth year as principal at YES Prep Northline. Our campus has had quite the journey, as we opened with our founding sixth-grade students for just eight days when Hurricane Harvey hit Houston. This past year, our high school founding has been impacted by the COVID pandemic. Through it all, one persistent theme has been our commitment to our students and families.
What are your favorite things about Northline Secondary? Why do you like working there?
I love working at a growing campus. It’s exciting to be a place where everyone plays a part in shaping the culture. At our campus, every team member has an opportunity to lead and add their voice to the greater collective.
What makes Northline Secondary different from the rest?
Our team is what makes YES Prep Northline special. Our teachers and staff have worked through tremendous challenges and have demonstrated resilience and adaptability time after time.
What type of teacher would be ideal for Northline Secondary?

Please describe your Northline Secondary’s culture.
Northline’s culture is fundamentally centered on relationships. The heart of our culture is our connections with each other and our students, creating a sense of community through understanding and collaboration.
What are the top priorities for Northline Secondary this coming year?
In the coming year, our goal is to continue to grow an exceptional high school as our founding class enters tenth grade. Our ultimate goal is to become an “A” rated campus!
Where do you want Northline Secondary to be in five years?
In five years, not only will our first two classes have graduated, but our sixth-grade team will be welcoming students from YES Prep Northline Elementary. Northline Revolutionaries of all ages will be leaders in our community!
