TIA – Level IV Spotlight Series
As part of our TIA – Level IV Spotlight Series, we are proud to continue highlighting the dedicated educators at YES Prep who have earned recognition through the Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) program. These teachers exemplify instructional excellence, foster student success, and contribute meaningfully to their school communities. Today, we celebrate Manuel Oscar Pérez García, a TIA-Recognized educator at YES Prep Fifth Ward, whose passion for education, student independence, and teacher wellness is making a lasting impact.
A Commitment to Education and Growth
With over 11 years in education, Manuel Oscar Pérez García has embraced multiple roles—from school psychologist to yoga instructor to teacher—all with the same purpose: to make learning a transformative experience. Now a Spanish I and II teacher at YES Prep Fifth Ward Secondary, Manuel’s journey in education is deeply rooted in his belief that knowledge is the key to solving the challenges we face as a society.
After immigrating to the United States from México, he was drawn to YES Prep’s mission and values, which closely aligned with his own educational philosophy. Having previously worked as a school psychologist, he understood the importance of nurturing not just academic growth but also emotional and personal development in students. His wife, a former YES Prep employee, introduced him to the organization, and he quickly saw it as a place where his skills and vision could thrive.
A Teaching Philosophy Built on Independence
Manuel’s approach to education centers on helping students become self-reliant. He believes that each student has their own version of success, and it is his role as an educator to guide them toward discovering their unique path.
"My main tactic is to have minimal interference in their journey, allowing them to make mistakes and celebrating their mindsets. In this way, I take the role of a mentor and coach, helping them develop independence rather than pushing them toward a predetermined outcome," he explains.
By creating a space for students to explore, fail, and learn from their experiences, Manuel fosters an environment where students take ownership of their learning and develop confidence in their abilities.
Transforming Teacher Well-Being
Beyond the classroom, Manuel’s influence extends to supporting fellow educators. One of his most impactful contributions to YES Prep has been the creation of the Teacher Wellness Program, which has helped dozens of educators achieve work-life balance, set goals, and find fulfillment in their roles.
"A transformative relationship for me has been with the YES Prep leaders who had a futuristic mindset and gave me the freedom and space to innovate," he shares. "Without their support, I wouldn’t have discovered my true vocation in education—making this profession sustainable for all educators and ensuring that self-care is treated as a necessity, not a luxury."
His work in teacher well-being has contributed to a stronger sense of balance among educators, reinforcing the idea that a fulfilled teacher is better equipped to support student success.
Why YES Prep?
For Manuel, YES Prep stands out because of its willingness to evolve.
"YES Prep recognizes that it doesn’t have all the answers and embraces change. In my almost eight years here, I have seen the organization grow, continuously seeking better practices for students and teachers. Leadership is open to feedback and constantly working to make educators feel valued."
Feeling heard, recognized, and supported is what makes YES Prep a place where he continues to invest his time and expertise. His contributions, from fostering self-reliant learners to championing teacher wellness, embody the values that make YES Prep a transformative environment for both students and educators alike.
