From Your Legacy’s School-Based Health Care Team
The first day of school is about more than supplies and schedules. It’s about helping your child feel well enough to learn, connect, and thrive. A healthy start can support better attendance, stronger focus in the classroom, and greater confidence throughout the school year. When students are healthy, they are more likely to be present, engaged, and ready to learn each day. At Legacy’s School-Based Health Care, we believe healthy students are better prepared to learn, grow, and succeed.
At Legacy’s School-Based Health Care, our nurse practitioners and therapists work together to support your child’s whole health. We believe: To learn well, you need to be well. From preventive care and vaccinations to behavioral health support, we're here to help students thrive in and out of the classroom. That's what Health Beyond Care looks like in a school setting.
Health = Readiness
Children learn best when their bodies and brains are balanced. Sleep, nutrition, routines, and emotional safety all play a role in how they show up, especially on day one.
Helpful ways to prepare at home:
- Keep bedtime routines consistent
- Offer a healthy breakfast
- Limit electronics, especially before bed, to support sleep and regulation
- Practice school-day routines ahead of time so the first day feels familiar
These small steps help children feel grounded, confident, and ready to learn.
Vaccines Matter and Support the Future
Vaccines are a key part of school readiness. They protect your child, their classmates, and the school community from preventable illnesses. Staying up to date on recommended childhood immunizations can help reduce missed school days and keep students healthy throughout the academic year.
When children are up to date, they are more likely to:
- Stay healthy and in school
- Avoid missed learning time
- Start the year with fewer disruptions
Vaccines also support long-term success. As students grow, staying current helps them transition smoothly into college and adult life, where immunization requirements are often needed for enrollment and participation.
Legacy helps students stay on track so they can complete these important health steps on time.
Sports Physicals: Get Ready for the Season
If your child is participating in athletics, remember that sports physicals are available before the beginning of school. Sports physicals help ensure students are healthy, cleared to participate, and ready for the school year and fall sports season.
Legacy's School-Based Health Care clinics make it easy for families to access sports physicals right on campus. Our care team is here to help your student stay healthy, active, and prepared for sports and extracurricular activities.
Emotional Readiness Counts Too
Starting school can bring big feelings, including excitement, worry, or both. Emotional wellness is an important part of school readiness, and students often perform better when they feel supported and connected. Our therapists support students in building coping skills so they can manage emotions and feel more confident.
Simple tools like deep breathing, grounding strategies, and naming feelings help children feel safe, supported, and ready to engage in learning.
Convenient Care at School
Legacy's School-Based Health Care clinics make it easier for students and families to get the care they need through a trusted school-based health clinic located right on campus. Services are available right on campus, and students can often return to class the same day after their appointment.
