When Justin West walked into a YES Prep classroom for the first time 15 years ago, he never imagined he would one day be recognized as one of the district’s most distinguished leaders. Today, as principal of YES Prep Northwest Secondary, he has been awarded the 2025 Virani Distinguished School Leader Award, an honor that celebrates courage, resilience, and dedication to student success.

For West, the recognition feels especially meaningful because it came through the voices of others. He explained that as a leader, words of thanks aren’t something you hear often. That’s why this award, to him, stands as proof of the years of hard work he and his team have invested to move students forward. “It’s a testament to the collective effort we’ve put in to see our students succeed,” he said, reflecting on the progress the campus has made.

Looking back on his time at Northwest, West believes resilience has been the value he’s leaned on most. Each school year, he said, has brought its own challenges—from staffing changes to merging campuses to pushing for higher academic achievement. Through it all, he’s relied on the ability to keep moving forward, even when the path wasn’t easy. That persistence has shaped the culture at Northwest and helped the school build momentum.

That resilience is evident in the milestones the campus has achieved in recent years. Under West’s leadership, Northwest has seen its STAAR accountability rating climb from a C to a high B. The school graduated its first senior class, launched an orchestra program, and created a consistent environment where students feel safe and supported. “These are the accomplishments that remind me why the work matters,” West shared, adding that none of it would have been possible without the teachers and students who commit themselves daily to the mission.

Even as he celebrates this recognition, West’s focus remains on the future. He is determined to see Northwest become an A-rated school and knows the work ahead will be what gets them there. His message to his community is clear: this award is not the finish line but a spark for what’s still possible. “This is just the beginning of the greatness we will see,” he said.

To future leaders considering stepping into a principal role, West offers straightforward advice: be willing to do the work alongside your team. He believes that trust and investment come not from issuing directives but from showing up in the trenches. It’s a lesson that has carried him from his early days as a Teach For America corps member at YES Prep North Forest to his current role leading Northwest Secondary—and now, to being recognized as a Virani Distinguished School Leader.
