For the past five years, Adrian Hudson has been a driving force in the math classrooms of YES Prep White Oak Secondary. Teaching 8th Grade Math and Algebra I, Adrain is recognized with a Level IV and Exemplary designation for his commitment to students’ growth and his steady presence in the school community.
Adrain’s journey into education wasn’t a straight path. After beginning his career in Houston ISD, Hurricane Harvey disrupted his trajectory and relocated him to a school undergoing major neighborhood changes. Around the same time, several friends recommended YES Prep, and he made the move. Looking back, it was a decision that aligned him with his purpose.
“I had no idea that I wanted to teach until I interned with Teach For America after my junior year of college,” Adrain recalled. That internship opened his eyes to the power of teaching—and the possibility of building a career in education.
Learning from Others
Adrian’s advice for new teachers is rooted in his own experience of growth and mentorship.
“Find what you are naturally good at and become great at it. Find people who can help you with the things that you are not good at,” he shared.
That philosophy shaped his career. “I have had so many people just take the time to help me improve into the teacher I am over the last 10 years, but my mentor from my time in Teach For America is the one who made sure I did not give up on teaching during my first year, when others gave up on me.”

A Teacher Who Cares Deeply
For Adrain, teaching at YES Prep is a calling. “I teach at YES because the kids deserve a teacher who loves them and holds them accountable,” he said.
His message to current and future educators is simple but powerful: Ask for help. It’s advice that has carried him from those early, uncertain days of teaching to the respected, exemplary educator he is today.
In this installment of our TIA-Level IV Teacher Spotlight series, we are proud to celebrate Adrain Hudson and the incredible impact he is making at YES Prep White Oak Secondary.
