YES Prep Public Schools

From the classroom to the athletic field, Luis Cruz is inspiring students to push their limits both academically and personally. In just two years at YES Prep Northwest Secondary, he has become a trusted AP Calculus and Pre-Calculus teacher, a dedicated Geometry instructor, and the coach of both the flag football and soccer teams. Recognized as a Level IV Teacher, Coach of the Year for 2024–2025, and recipient of the CA1 Performance Award, Luis’s influence reaches far beyond test scores. In this next installment of the TIA-Level IV Spotlight blog series, we celebrate Luis Cruz.

A Journey Sparked by Mentorship

Luis’s path to teaching wasn’t a straight line but the result of a year-long conversation with someone who saw his potential before he fully saw it himself.

“My college mentor and co-author for my published conjecture spent a whole year convincing me I would be a good teacher.”

That encouragement stayed with him, planting the seed for a career in education. A referral from a friend ultimately brought him to YES Prep, where his academic expertise and leadership skills have flourished.

The Power of Relationships

From his earliest days at YES Prep, Luis recognized that teaching was about more than delivering lessons, it was about connection.

“I recognized that building strong relationships with the students increased their work ethic and made it easier to get them to stay dedicated.”

That belief is personal for Luis. Having grown up in the same community where he now teaches, he understands his students’ experiences on a deeper level. He works hard to be a positive male role model, especially for those who may feel unseen or isolated.

“I am able to give back to the community I grew up in. This allows me to relate to a small group of kids who may feel alienated.”

Learning from Early Mentors

Luis credits much of his growth as a teacher to Gabriela Villalobos, his Grade Level Chair during his first year at YES Prep Northbrook High School.

“She always came to work with a positive mindset and helped me when I needed it. My first year was very rough, but I learned a lot from her and gained a very positive mindset towards education.”

Her support shaped the way Luis approaches his work today, bringing optimism and perseverance to the classroom, even when challenges arise.

Advice for New Educators

For Luis, success in the classroom comes down to two things: preparation and authenticity.

“Be yourself and make sure to prepare the material beforehand that you plan to teach.”

Whether he’s breaking down complex calculus concepts or motivating athletes on the field, Luis Cruz is committed to helping students discover their own strengths and push beyond their perceived limits. And for the students at YES Prep Northwest Secondary, they have a teacher and coach who not only teaches them formulas and plays—but also models what it means to lead with purpose.
