As part of YES Prep’s TIA–Level IV Teacher Spotlight series, we are proud to celebrate educators whose excellence in the classroom is transforming student outcomes across our district. This series honors teachers whose instructional skill, leadership, and dedication to students exemplify what it means to deliver the education our students deserve.

For Andrew Fitzpatrick, or better known at the Brays Oaks campus as Fitz, teaching was never part of the original plan, but ten years ago, a recommendation from a friend led him to Brays Oaks Secondary, where an unexpected opportunity quickly became a lifelong calling.

“Teaching never seemed like my calling early on,” Fitz shared. “But once I realized I had a passion for education, it made the last 10 years fly by.”

Now a Level IV teacher, AP Biology and Environmental Systems instructor, and Teaching Excellence Mentor, Fitz has spent a decade shaping classrooms, mentoring colleagues, and inspiring students through a deep commitment to science, relationships, and community.

Teaching Like a Rockstar

Fitz believes great teaching is equal parts preparation and presence, and he describes it in a way his students instantly understand.

“To me, teaching is like going on stage as a rockstar,” he said. “Your antics and charisma are what draw the attention, and your knowledge and preparation of the material is like the sick guitar solo."

That mindset shows up in his classroom through engaging instruction, strong routines, and subtle but effective management strategies. Rather than calling students out publicly when there are behavior issues, Fitz relies on proximity—continuing instruction while standing near students who need redirection.

“They usually stop the behavior, and I don’t have to call them out or stop the lesson,” he explained, preserving both momentum and respect in the classroom.

A Legacy Built on Relationships

When Fitz reflects on his impact, he points first to relationships with colleagues who became lifelong friends and students who left lasting impressions.

“When I think about impact, I think about lifelong friends that started as just colleagues,” he said. “And I think about the students from all my AP Biology classes.”

Some of his most meaningful connections come from teaching the same students in both 9th and 12th grade, walking alongside them through key moments of growth and transformation.

“Those classes especially hold a special place in my heart,” Fitz shared.

Why YES Prep Still Feels Like Home

Although Fitz has spent time at other schools, he continues to choose YES Prep because of its clear mission and purpose.

“The vision and mission at YES are clear,” he said. “It makes me feel like I’m doing more than just teaching, I can give back to the community that I grew up in.”

His advice to future educators is honest and grounded in experience, YES Prep is challenging, but the rewards are real.

“Make sure you want to work hard for the mission,” Fitz said. “YES Prep is not an easy district, but it’s very rewarding seeing the progress and change in these kids’ lives.”
