As part of YES Prep’s 2025–2026 TIA–Level IV Teacher Spotlight series, we celebrate educators whose impact reaches far beyond test scores – teachers who shape culture, build character, and model what it means to lead with purpose. For Joshua Mallory, a Level IV-designated Physical Education teacher at North Central Secondary, greatness has always been rooted in relationships, discipline, and paying it forward.
Finding His Way to YES Prep
Joshua’s journey to YES Prep Public Schools began with a simple nudge from someone who knew him well. A close friend working at the school encouraged him to apply, convinced he would be a great fit. Joshua flew in from Ohio, interviewed, and was hired the very next day. Twelve years later, he’s still in the gym where he’s taught everything from 6th and 8th grade PE to high school PE, Health, and even Algebra, making an impact one class at a time.
Teaching, for Joshua, has always been about giving back. After playing basketball through college and earning his degree, he felt called to support students the same way others once supported him. PE became his platform for mentorship, accountability, and growth.
Inspired by Coaching and Character
Joshua traces his inspiration back to his own high school basketball coach, someone who shaped not just how he played, but how he lived. “He made it cool to do the right thing and to always strive to be your best,” Joshua shared. That lesson stayed with him and now guides how he shows up for students every day, setting high expectations, modeling integrity, and encouraging young people to be their best selves both on and off the court.
Demystifying Greatness in the Gym
Ask Joshua what makes a great teacher, and his answer is simple but powerful: relationships. “One tactic I use to be a great teacher is building real relationships with my students,” he shared. He takes the time to learn about students’ lives, interests, and goals so they know they are seen as people not just athletes or participants in class.
“When students feel seen and valued, they’re more willing to work hard, listen, and push themselves,” Joshua explained. That trust becomes the foundation for everything that happens in the gym from teamwork and perseverance to confidence and leadership, creating a space where students feel empowered to grow.
The Power of Watching Students Grow
Over the years, Joshua has watched countless students grow into adults who make a difference in the world. “Watching them go on to do great things, whether it’s serving in the military, working in professional sports, or even becoming my colleagues, has been incredibly rewarding,” he said. Seeing students grow into productive citizens who give back to their communities is what makes this work so meaningful and reinforces the lasting impact of relationships built on the court.

Why YES Is the Place to Teach
For Joshua, it’s the students. “I’ve never been around a more respectful, hardworking group of individuals,” he shared. Their determination and character make coming to work each day a joy and remind him why YES Prep is a place where educators can truly make a difference.
Advice for Future YES Prep Educators
Joshua’s message to anyone considering teaching at YES Prep is, “If you have a passion for helping students grow, not just academically, but as people, this is the place for you,” he said. The work is demanding, and the relationships require real investment, but when educators pour into their students, that energy comes right back, making every challenge worth it.
