At YES Prep, family partnership is not an add-on to learning; it is built into the school year by design.

Every fall and spring, YES Prep campuses pause regular instruction so teachers can focus entirely on one thing, meeting one-on-one with families to create clear, individualized plans for student success. These Family-Teacher Conference days are protected time, intentionally set aside so every family has the opportunity to sit down with their child’s teacher, ask questions, review progress, and align on what comes next.

This structure is part of our commitment to ensuring every student receives the education they deserve, and it’s one of the ways YES Prep differentiates itself from other school systems.

Dedicated Time. Individualized Support. Real Partnership.

Across campuses, educators shared how powerful it is to create space where families and teachers can focus solely on one student at a time.

“We set the intention with each conference that families leave with specific ideas for helping their student grow to the next level,” said Brian Vannest, Principal of East End Elementary. “The day is supposed to feel like a real win-win.”

That same intentionality carries through secondary campuses, where conferences often serve as pivotal checkpoints for academic progress and long-term planning.

“These conversations create honest, two-way dialogue,” said Natalie Garcia, Principal of YES Prep West. “Teachers and families align on goals and supports, building trust and clarity around what each student needs to stay on track.”

During conferences, families walk through:

  • Their child’s academic progress and grade-level expectations
  • Assessment data explained in clear, accessible language
  • Examples of on-grade-level student work
  • Personalized learning goals and next steps
  • Strategies families can use at home to support growth

These conversations are not rushed. They are not one-size-fits-all. They are intentionally designed to center each student and family.

What Makes YES Prep’s Approach Stand Out

Feedback from teachers and principals highlighted how YES Prep’s system-level commitment makes Family-Teacher Conferences meaningful and accessible.

“At Airline, it’s required for teachers to meet with 100% of their parents,” shared Cynovia Hall, Principal of Airline Elementary. “Parents can see firsthand what on-grade-level work looks like and better understand expectations. This allows families to see the fullness of the education we strive to provide and the partnership required to help every student reach their highest potential.”

At the secondary level, that clarity extends beyond the conference day itself.

“All students have individualized academic goals that are shared transparently to foster a true partnership between school and home,” said Bina Dao, Managing Director of School Culture – Secondary. “At the secondary level, these goals are updated live and accessible in DeansList for both students and families, allowing the conversation and accountability to continue well beyond the conference.” Across campuses, schools prioritized:

  • Protected conference days in both fall and spring
  • One-on-one meetings focused on individual student needs
  • Bilingual outreach and family support
  • Flexible scheduling, including early morning, late afternoon, and virtual options
  • Clear visuals and examples to demystify student data

These intentional choices reflect the power of YES Prep, a school system designed to remove barriers and create access for every family.

Turning Conversations Into Growth

Educators consistently shared that when families leave conferences with clarity and shared goals, students feel supported on all sides.

One moment from early childhood captured this impact clearly.

“During the conference, we modeled a few fun ways to practice letter identification at home,” said Shola Akinwolere, Pre-K Teacher at YES Prep Airline. “By the next self-data tracker, the student had gained five more letters. It showed how families, teachers, and students can work together to celebrate growth and overcome challenges.”

At the secondary level, leaders saw similar momentum—especially during key transition years.

“Family conferences were helpful in creating protected time to meet with families,” said Erin Sadler, Principal of Southwest Secondary. “In 10th grade, a critical year, our team had back-to-back meetings all day. When families show up for these conversations, it reinforces how important that partnership is.”

These moments underscore a simple truth that when families and teachers plan together, students grow with greater confidence and clarity.
