At YES Prep, we believe that great teaching changes lives—and we’re proud to honor the educators who go above and beyond to ensure that every student in Houston receives the education they deserve. This year, we’re launching our TIA and Level IV Teacher Spotlight Series to celebrate and recognize the outstanding teachers who have earned designations through the Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) and/or the prestigious Level IV distinction on The Teacher Pathway, our teacher evaluation system.
YES Prep was one of the first districts in Texas approved to participate in TIA, an innovative initiative that rewards exceptional educators for their impact in the classroom. Through this program, teachers can earn annual allotments of up to $32,000 based on student growth and instructional excellence. Teachers with a TIA designation—Recognized, Exemplary, or Master—can achieve financial milestones such as earning up to $101,500 annually while remaining in the classroom to do what they do best: teach.
Today, we are proud to spotlight one such educator, Coach Joshua Gutierrez Sr., whose journey, leadership, and unwavering dedication have shaped the lives of students across multiple YES Prep campuses and is entering his 20th year in education.

A Legacy Built on Leadership and Purpose
Coach Gutierrez’s journey at YES Prep began over a decade ago, when he launched the athletic and physical education programs at both Brays Oaks Secondary and White Oak Secondary campuses. As a founding leader at two schools and a district-wide influencer in athletics, his focus was never just on the scoreboard—it was on the students. His leadership was grounded in mentorship, accountability, and building programs where young people could grow, not only as athletes but as individuals.
These experiences served as a bridge to the classroom. “Leadership isn't just about strategy or winning games,” he shares. “It’s about mentoring young people, building character, and helping them discover their potential both on and off the field.” That call led him to transition into full-time teaching, where he now brings the same energy and purpose to every PE class at YES Prep North Central Secondary.
Demystifying Greatness: Leading with Team Culture
One of the keys to Coach Gutierrez’s success is the way he cultivates a strong, team-oriented classroom culture. Drawing from his background in athletics, he establishes a foundation of clear expectations, mutual respect, and shared goals. “I apply the same leadership and communication skills I used as an athletic director,” he says, “to create a structured, supportive environment where every student feels valued and motivated.”
This mindset helps students take ownership of their learning, much like athletes take ownership of their performance. By reinforcing the power of teamwork, Coach Gutierrez turns the classroom into a space where students can grow together—building confidence, accountability, and drive along the way.
Transformative Relationships: From the Field to the Future
For Coach Gutierrez, one relationship in particular crystallized his purpose as an educator. A student-athlete he mentored was once struggling with behavior, academics, and confidence. Through consistent encouragement and accountability, that student began to thrive—not just in sports, but in school and in life.
“That relationship taught me that real change happens when young people feel seen, supported, and believed in,” he reflects. “It revealed that my passion wasn’t just in managing programs, but in helping students grow holistically.” That realization led him to pursue teaching full-time—bringing the same level of care and consistency to every student, every day.
Why YES Prep?
“YES Prep is an inspiring place to teach,” Coach Gutierrez affirms. “The diverse student body and strong support from administrators empower teachers to make a meaningful impact.” That impact is personal, too—Coach Gutierrez’s own son attends YES Prep North Central, adding an even deeper level of purpose to his work. “Knowing my child is part of this community reinforces my belief in what we do here every day,” he shares. “This isn’t just a place to teach—it’s a place to grow, to lead, and to be part of something greater.”
Advice to Future Teachers
Coach Gutierrez encourages those considering a role at YES Prep to come ready to work hard and grow professionally. “Be passionate about equity, student success, and being part of a supportive team,” he says. “Learn about our mission and culture—and show how your values align on your application. This is a place where dedicated educators can truly make an impact.”
