This summer, two YES Prep students were awarded the Brown Summer Scholarship, a scholarship awarded to students who are participating in a variety of experiences that support college readiness while engaging in rigorous academic study. For Rudy Reynoso of YES Prep White Oak Secondary and Jennifer Solache of YES Prep Southside Secondary, the scholarship was not only an academic milestone but also a life-changing journey of self-discovery and hope for the future.

Rudy Reynoso – YES Prep White Oak High School

Rudy Alexander Gamaliel Reynoso Quiej, a rising senior at YES Prep White Oak Secondary, joined the Brown Summer Program to study electrical engineering at Syracuse University for four weeks.

“Being in a new place was incredible and unparalleled,” Rudy shared. “It was an unforgettable experience and an opportunity to meet new people and see new places. It reminded me that we never stop learning new things.”

For Rudy, receiving the scholarship carried deep personal meaning as a first-generation college student. “It was a source of pride for my parents and an achievement that honors my grandfather, who motivated me to follow my dreams after his passing,” he said.

Looking ahead, Rudy plans to pursue engineering with interests in electrical engineering, chemistry, and quantum mechanics. He hopes to attend Houston Christian University, where he can benefit from smaller class sizes and supportive faculty. “Through education, I not only honor my ancestors but also hope to inspire others like me to fight for their dreams,” Rudy said.

He credits his teachers, including Ms. Sanchez and Ms. Mariah Cruz, along with advisors Laura Alvarado and Mr. Villalobos, for pushing him beyond his limits. “YES Prep is not only a community that has prepared me academically but also a family in which I feel accepted,” Rudy shared.

When asked what advice he would share with other YES Prep students, Rudy said: “Everything is possible if you set your mind to it. Failure is part of growth. It’s always better to try than to wonder ‘what if.’ All you need is to dream.”

Jennifer Solache – YES Prep Southside

For Jennifer Solache, a rising senior at YES Prep Southside, the Brown Summer Scholarship opened the doors to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. The experience was filled with awe, discovery, and friendship.

“When I arrived on campus, I was honestly in shock. I never imagined I would have the opportunity to step into a place like Johns Hopkins,” they recalled. “I felt anxious at first, but soon I found my new best friends, which brought me joy.”

During the two-week program, Jennifer explored new cities and experiences — from neighborhood walks and an Orioles baseball game to visiting Washington, D.C., which quickly became a favorite memory. “I loved exploring the parks, museums, and watching the sunset with my new group of friends,” she said.

As a first-generation student, the scholarship made all the difference. “Without it, I wouldn’t have been able to participate. It eased my worries about expenses and gave me the chance to grow in ways I never imagined,” Jennifer shared.

Inspired by a passion for helping others, Jennifer plans to pursue a career in the medical field as a child psychologist or pediatrician. “I want to give back to my community and make a difference in children’s lives, one at a time,” she said.

She credits YES Prep and counselor Mrs. Washington for helping her find and apply for the scholarship. “She believed in me, even when I doubted myself. Without her, I would have missed out on this incredible summer.”

Reflecting on her journey, Jennifer acknowledged that her biggest challenge was overcoming self-doubt. “As a first-generation student, I didn’t believe I had what it took. But everything worked out, and now I know I am capable of amazing things,” she shared.

Her advice to other YES Prep students is simple yet powerful: “Hold on to hope. Trust yourself, ask questions, and advocate for yourself. Speaking up can open doors you didn’t even know existed.”

As a proud member of the Class of 2026, Jennifer carries with her the lessons of integrity and self-advocacy. “YES Prep Southside has been my home since sixth grade, and the sense of community has prepared me to take on the world.”
