As part of YES Prep’s ongoing Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) Level IV Spotlight series, we celebrate educators who go above and beyond to create transformative learning experiences for students. This week, we’re proud to feature Coach Jena Edwards, a dedicated Physical Education teacher and coach at YES Prep West Secondary, whose passion for sports and student growth shines both on and off the court.
Her journey with YES Prep began thanks to a former manager, George Fields, who encouraged her to bring her skills and energy to the school system.
For the past seven years, Coach Edwards has been an integral part of the West community, serving as 8th Grade-Grade Level Chair, Boys Middle School and High School Coach, Girls Varsity Basketball and Soccer Coach, and even contributing as an Adaptive Physical Education Content Writer. Jena also develops our first-year teachers as an Induction Leader and Teacher Development Saturday facilitator at YES Prep’s Teaching Excellence alternative certification program.
“My love of sports and seeing kids learn new skills and actually using those skills inside and outside the classroom, is what keeps me going,” she shared.
Through her years of service, Coach Edwards has developed a deep appreciation for patience and the relationships that make YES Prep West feel like home. She credits her colleagues and former students, many of whom return to visit, as her greatest motivators.
When asked what makes YES Prep special, she said it best, “It’s the place to be if you really want to impact the community you work in. Students need to know they have the support of their teachers.”
