YES Prep Public Schools is excited to announce that 11 of our secondary schools have been ranked among the top high schools in the nation by the Jay Mathews Challenge Index High School Rankings (Challenge Index), the oldest high school ranking system in the country. The Challenge Index was previously known as America’s Most Challenging High Schools, as published in The Washington Post.
The Challenge Index is the only list that does not rely on test scores, which are more a measure of student family income than school quality. It is also the only list that compares private and public schools.
The Challenge Index ranks high schools by a simple ratio: the number of Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) or Cambridge tests given at a school each year, divided by the number of seniors who graduated that year.
High schools ranked no. 220 or above are in the top 1 percent of America’s 22,000 high schools, and no. 440 or above are in the top 2 percent. This puts all our current YES Prep secondary schools ranked in the top 2% nationally.
