Families invited to YES Prep, including first elementary schools opening next school year as part of expansion to serve 25,000 students by 2025
YES Prep Public Schools, which helps graduates earn college degrees at four times the rate of their peers, continues to expand as it opens registration for its lottery Nov. 1. The public charter school now serving grades 6-12 plans to open its first elementary schools in August 2020, giving Houston families more options for their children’s K-12 education.
As the highest performing public school system in Houston, all of YES Prep’s eligible schools are ranked in the top 10 percent in Texas and nationally by U.S. News and World Report. While most students entering YES Prep Public Schools perform below grade level, YES Prep educators have, for more than 20 years, increased the number of students from underserved communities who graduate from college prepared to lead.
In August 2020, YES Prep will open elementary schools to provide the same quality education to families with younger children. The first two YES Prep elementary schools—feeding into A-rated YES Prep Southeast and YES Prep North Central—will serve students in kindergarten through second grade, with Pre-K to fifth-grade levels added in following years. YES Prep plans to open 10 elementary schools to serve 10,000 Houston children in pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade for a total of 25,000 students by 2025.
“In addition to personalized instructional lessons by top, certified elementary school teachers, our extraordinary staff will work with families to determine each child’s goals and areas of support needed on their path to college and careers,” YES Prep Public Schools CEO Mark DiBella said.
YES Prep Public Schools are open and tuition-free to all children with no special requirements for admittance. YES Prep uses a random, automated lottery for schools when there are more students interested in attending than available classroom space.
Families interested in enrolling students at one of YES Prep’s 21 campuses for the 2020-2021 school year, can register for the lottery 24 hours a day starting Nov. 1, 2019. (Registration for partnership campuses Northbrook middle and high schools is available via Spring Branch Independent School District’s lottery.) The lottery registration closes Feb. 10, 2020, and families will learn the lottery’s results on Feb. 28, 2020.
YES Prep campuses provide transportation, special education, English language learning and all public school services. Families seeking additional information about YES Prep’s elementary schools are invited to a Fall Festival with food and games on Nov. 2 at YES Prep Southeast and on Nov. 9 at YES Prep North Central.
