About U.S. News Best High School Rankings

U.S. News & World Report conducts its high school rankings based on a comprehensive methodology that takes into account multiple key principles. These principles include college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth, and graduation rates. The evaluation process employs data from various sources, including statewide assessments, Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) test data, and graduation rates to ensure a balanced and unbiased ranking. This rigorous evaluation method allows U.S. News & World Report to accurately identify high-performing schools and spotlight their significant achievements.

The highest-ranked U.S. public schools in the U.S. News & World Report's 2023-2024 Best High Schools rankings are those where students have surpassed expectations in state assessments for math, reading, and science, earned qualifying scores on a variety of college-level exams, and graduated in large numbers. These rankings, developed in partnership with RTI International, a North Carolina-based global nonprofit social science research firm, evaluated approximately 17,680 public high schools out of nearly 25,000 reviewed. The methodology involved aggregating the weighted scores across six indicators of school quality to compute a single score between zero to 100 that reflects the school's performance across these metrics on a national percentile basis.

The transparency of the ranking process is maintained by elucidating how each public school performed on each ranking factor, both nationally and within the state. Rankings were assigned in descending order based on these overall scores. The ranking system is designed to be inclusive, and even schools with smaller enrollments or those without a 12th grade are considered, although they may be displayed as unranked due to the nature of publicly available data.
