HOUSTON – February 26, 2025 – Houston middle and high school students will face off in a fun game of flag football at an event to celebrate student health and well-being. YES Prep Public Schools’ Child Nutrition Team is proud to host the Fuel Up Wellness event — an afternoon dedicated to promoting wellness, physical activity and healthy choices among students — at YES Prep Southside Secondary on March 6 from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
"At YES Prep, we believe that a well-rounded education includes not only strong academics but also opportunities for students to develop healthy habits," YES Prep Director of Child Nutrition Jessiica Howell, Ph.D., said. "We are proud to bring the Fuel Up Wellness Event to our school, reinforcing the importance of active lifestyles, nutrition and overall well-being. This event is about more than just flag football—it’s about equipping students with the tools they need to make healthier choices every day."
This event is made possible through the NFL FLAG-In-School program, which provides free flag football kits to schools nationwide to encourage physical activity and teamwork. Supported by the NFL, GENYOUth and the NFL Foundation, the program has engaged millions of students and is helping expand access to flag football as it gains popularity, including its upcoming debut in the 2028 Summer Olympics.
Flag football is an emerging part of YES Prep’s athletic offerings, with several secondary schools featuring flag football teams that provide students with opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork, and athletic skills.
“Flag football is an exciting emerging sport across the nation, in colleges and universities, and for us at YES Prep. Flag football is a competitive and rewarding sport that we are proud to offer to our students” said Tiffany Steele, YES Prep Athletic Director. “I am grateful for community partnerships that allow us to strengthen our flag football program – which directly impacts our ability to provide more meaningful opportunities to develop skills and build character through sport.”
Houston City Council Member Carolyn Evans-Shabazz, representative of District D – The District of Destination, will be in attendance to recognize student athletes, present certificates and issue a proclamation in honor of the event.
" As the District of Destination, we recognize that when we invest in our students, we strengthen the entire community.," Evans-Shabazz said. ". Fuel Up Wellness is a shining example of how education, athletics, and community partnerships come together to create meaningful opportunities for our youth. I commend YES Prep for its commitment to ensuring students have the resources to grow, learn, and lead—both in the classroom and in life. "
Additionally, 97.9 The Box DJs J.Mac and Young Jas will provide high-energy entertainment for students at the event.
The flag football game will feature 10 high school and middle school students, showcasing their teamwork and athletic abilities. Thanks to a grant, each player will receive a football and a medal, and the winning team and MVP will be awarded trophies to recognize their outstanding performance.
