January 13, 2022

Dear YES Prep families,

Welcome back! We hope you had a safe and relaxing winter break, and that you are ready to continue to thrive in this second half of the school year. As we get ready to enjoy Monday off to commemorate MLK Day, we want to take this opportunity to honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Thanks to him and other civil rights leaders that blazed a path towards a more equitable world, we at YES Prep are able to fulfill our mission of helping students pursue lives of opportunity.

Thank you for reading this Family Update in its entirety. Below, you will find information, news and updates regarding daily attendance, Intent to Return survey, monthly Possip Pulse Check, elementary common assessments for third and fourth grade, reading the high school report card, college preparation for juniors, emergency response drills, and tax season.

DAILY ATTENDANCE IN 2023

Our second semester is underway, and we are excited to see our students again! Unfortunately, we have seen a substantial drop in attendance for students during the first week of January.

Report cards for Semester 1 and Quarter 2 were posted in Skyward last week. Academic progress is heavily influenced by attendance. If your child will be absent for more than three days, it's advisable to contact the school's front office so we can provide the necessary support. A list of school front office phone numbers can be found on the YES Prep website

For strong attendance in 2023, we recommend you take the following four steps:

  • Ensure your student wakes up on time, makes it to their mode of transportation, and arrives to school on time every day.
  • Establish regular bedtime and morning routines.
  • Avoid appointments and extended trips while school is in session.
  • Regularly monitor your child’s attendance on Skyward.

INTENT TO RETURN SURVEY LAUNCHING JANUARY 23

ELEMENTARY COMMON ASSESSMENT FOR 3RD & 4TH GRADERS

Third and fourth-grade students will be taking the reading and math common assessments on Tuesday, January 17, and Thursday, January 19. This assessment is a test aligned in rigor to the STAAR state test that your child will be taking at the end of the year. The STAAR test is used by the state and schools to determine a student’s readiness for the next grade level.

The common assessment will have approximately 32 questions. It is designed to take around 4 hours, but students have the entire day to complete it if needed. Teachers will use the results of this test to plan for reteaching content, provide interventions, create new learning goals for your child and assign the support needed to ensure that every student grows and improves their readiness for the next grade level.

REGARDING YOUR CHILD’S HIGH SCHOOL REPORT CARD

How to read a report card with college-going culture in mind

This past week your child received their latest report card. When discussing their report card, one of the ways you should look at it is how it affects their college aspirations. Our College Initiatives team has created this conversation guide to discuss how your child's grades affect their GPA and what type of colleges their grades would MATCH them with.

For families with current juniors, please make sure you have this conservation this spring as your child is actively engaged in creating the first draft of their college list and meeting with their college counselor.

What “NG” means on a report card

On report cards for high school students issued this month, the notation "NG" may have been added that hides a student's grade due to having 18 or more unexcused absences in that course. Students who receive NG grades may not be failing the course; instead, they failed to meet expanded state attendance requirements, so they will not receive a grade until that course is recovered.

To learn more about how your child can recover their grade, click here

COLLEGE PREPARATION PROGRAMS FOR JUNIORS, CLASS OF 2024

Our College Initiatives team is excited to offer our 11th-grade students the opportunity to connect with higher education institutions. Over the next three months, YES Prep is offering two programs that will do just that, Junior Spring Trip and IMPACT Saturday. Junior Spring Trip will be taking place during the weeks of March 20 and 27. As for IMPACT Saturday, juniors who qualify should have already received their invitation to attend.

To learn more about these two programs and to read about the experience students have had participating, please click here

YES PREP EMERGENCY RESPONSE DRILLS

Conducting drills of the Standard Response Protocols (SRP) to emergency events is not only an important step in ensuring students, staff and visitors are prepared for a real emergency, but it is also legally required.

Every month YES Prep schools conduct drills for fire evacuation and at least one other SRP response (lockdown, hold, secure and shelter). Moving forward, schools will be sending family communication regarding when drills have been conducted. The purpose of this communication is to inform families that the practice has taken place and to encourage conversations with students and families regarding appropriate response to emergencies.

You can find more information on the Standard Response Protocol practices on the Safety and Security page on our website.

TAX SEASON IS HERE – INFORMATION TO KNOW & COMMUNITY RESOURCES AVAILABLE

Even though Tax Day is three months away, on April 18, 2023, tax season starts this month! By January 31, all employers should be providing employees with their W2s for their taxes. When you receive your W2 and other tax documents, please ensure you save them for your records, and start preparing your taxes refund application.

Completing your taxes is essential to helping your child enroll in college. Even if your child is not currently a junior, having your taxes in order can assist in making the process of your child applying to college and applying for scholarships and financial aid easier.

To learn more about community resources, like IRS VITA and BakerRipley Tax Centers, as well as how filing your taxes impacts your child’s college application process, click here

Once again, thank you for reading this month’s Family Update. Our next Family Update letter to all families will be Friday, February 10.

Thank you.

13 de enero de 2023

Estimadas familias de YES Prep,

¡Bienvenidos!

Gracias.
