“We are going to become an increasingly anti-racist organization. ‘Increasingly’ because the work is perpetual—work we’ve engaged in for years now,” announced CEO Mark DiBella about the charter school’s commitment to the YES Prep community at YES Prep Public Schools’ Fourth Annual Leading Houston Forward Celebration, that took place virtually on Wednesday, October 28, 2020.
The online event raised over $765,000, including more than $22,000 in additional day-of donations, thanks to Highcrest Capital’s incentive dollar-for-dollar match of up to $10,000. Chaired by Meredith and Ben Marshall, the event hosted over 350 viewers in support of the 15,400 students in grades K-2 and 6-12 at YES Prep’s current 21 campuses across Houston.
Guests enjoyed a captivating, pre-recorded interview with Dr. Ibram X. Kendi America’s leading scholar on anti-racism and best-selling author. Led by CEO Mark DiBella, an engaging and thought-provoking conversation delved into racism in America and the need for empathy, understanding, and collaboration by all as we address racial inequity in education.
Named after the YES Prep founder and visionary, the Chris Barbic Legacy Award was presented to longtime advocates and supporters Debra and Mark Gregg for their tireless commitment to YES Prep’s mission. Mark Gregg is Founder and CEO of KiwiEnergy, Ltd., and concluded his YES Prep board chair tenure of five years this September.
